jimmy Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 The Wife has decided to move, I have to agree with her, but the new house is about 3 miles away, and I was wondering any tips to home the birds in as quickly as possible?? and how long will it take? for the birds to home in
ALF Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 Jimmy i moved my loft about 2 miles 4 years ago and was told to let my birds out within a week(which i did, by the way still had a loft at my old address)1st night they all slept out 2nd night some came up but would'nt come in so the next day i went to my old loft and got them in and took then to my new loft and fed them next day let them out and that night 90% of them came in so i just repeated that with the other hawf of the birds and all were broke in a fortnight ;)
peterpau Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 I brought mine here three times and let them fly back to our old house before we moved. Brought my old loft with me, for weeks I could see our birds going round our old address, lost 1 from 30
jimmy white Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 when putting loft up, make a make shift aviary where they can see roundabout , after they look to to have settled down a bit, let them out hungary , try feeding a few grains outside the loft , then theyll soon home, providing their getting no food at the old house
Guest Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 During WW2, the pigeon Corp often moved their lofts, especially in the North African Desert. They got their birds to locate the new loft by painting a speciific insignia on the loft roof and the birds located to the insignia. Worth a try !!!!!!
stevebelbin Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 Take them to the new address every day and release them, they will go back to the old loft obviously, but they will get familiar with the area at the same time. Then when your new lofts are up, pair them up, get them down on eggs and let them out every day for a bath, if they go back to the old house and the old loft is still up, leave them in it when they go back for a few days with no food and hang bags of the roof inside. Sounds cruel but they wont go back many times after that.
johnny11 Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 I broke mine (apart from the odd stubborn ones) in a few days. i paired them up and let them out (with hens locked in box). first time they took to the sky they went home. I got them in the old loft and took them straight back and opened the basket in front of the loft with doors open. I spent the whole day doing this. Next day let them out and repeated the process. the following day let them out and all except two stayed. one thing i did notice is when you split them they go back looking for the hens in the first season. last season I did not have the probelm. then you can repeat the process with the hens John

HALF IS 50% SO THAT WAS YOU GETTING 140% IN GOOD GOING ALF
ALF Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 I let hawf them oot at first and got 90% of them in then i let the other hawf oot thats why i said i still had a loft at the old address :P Smart *expletive removed* ;D ;D ;D There's always 1
Pompey Mick Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 Seperate the birds and take away the hens, strip the loft of nestboxes and perches, feed & water the cocks in a basket at the new address as many days as you can, let them return to an empty shell off a loft. When you move , re-pair the pigeons and settle them to their nest boxes, once you are satisfied they are settled let out the Cocks only. It took me two nights to settle my cocks, once they are settled let them all out. When I did this the hens all nighted out but returned to the new loft the next day. I removed my old loft on the fourth day.
