sapper756 Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 Interested to know how fanciers treat thier birds over the winter/moult. Do you shut them up or still give them thier liberty?
AlanWilkins Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 use to lock them up but ive been advised by a very very good fancier to fly them every other day through the winter (unless extreamly bad) but if the miss 2 days the 3rd they must go out no matter what the weather this is once the moult is over. And this bloke is rated as one of the best in the uk at any distance
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 AGREE HERE ALAN KEEP THEM OUT FLYING AND I AM NOT ONE OF THE BEST FLIERS IN BRITAIN
ACE LOFTS Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 oh yes allan ones the moult is over they start going out
Guest CS Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 shut them up and plenty of hot baths Do you put anything in the bath?
ACE LOFTS Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 the best bath salts i found were klaus i got them from the show "blackpool" i think they kick ass out of all the other 1's on the market and trust me iv used a few. there in a yellow tub and as soon as u smell them it goes straight to your head thats the 1 u want. but the feathering on the pigeons 1's had a bath turns out really nice and it kills most of the bugs on the feathers. gret product
Guest CS Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 Cheers, do you know where can i buy klaus ???????????
Guest Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 Cocks one day, hens the next. Even when moulting. Birds at different stages of moult - some wont want to come out others come out and do 1/2 hour, some just lay in the sun. More times out more baths they get when moulting. Currently use garlic water with a little added cider vinegar in the bath. I find that if let out through winter when spring comes and hawk is at her worst old birds are fit, sharp and very hard to catch. When I listened to someone last year and gave them little winter exercise this spring when I let them out they were too unfit to out run the hawk in the first couple of weeks so lost a couple. Back to my normal routine this year. Hope this helps.
ACE LOFTS Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 hi cs the only place i no were to get it from is blackpool, what i do is get enough for the year that way u get a deal.
Tony C Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 Do you put anything in the bath? Water (undiluted) ;D ;D ;D
andyb Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 so long as they are well watered , fed and bathed it really makes no difference to the pigeons. have tried both ways and still find they take the same time to come into form when you need it.
AlanWilkins Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 best thing in the bath water n ill stand by is common garden mint boiled for 20 mins strained n put in the water. Costs nothing worth its weight in gold.
Guest Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 not heard of that one, what does it do alan is it relaxing or something. Or do lice hate it.
andyb Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 prob very good for the respiratory but its a new one on me
Guest Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 with the winter i find it hard enough to feed the birds let alone exercise them! not so bad at the min but a few more weeks and it dark going to work and dark coming home, same for my dad, so they remain locked in during winter, they might go out at weekends.
Wiley Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 same heregezza after my darkness yb are locked up after a month, after that it gets dark and dont have time apart from weekends.at the winter the lights in our lofts are left on till 8 o clock!at the moment there moulting like gooduns and mike lycetts advice of putting buttermilk in the drinker is working a treat although they dont like drinkin it much ive notcied an improvement in more feathers
Guest Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 very good, good to see good advice been given this is what this is all about
Beanz Posted October 3, 2006 Report Posted October 3, 2006 I try to get my birds out as much as possible as this means you dont have to work them as much at the beginning of the season in cold winds. Also after a frosty night you get some really sunny days and the birds love them
