Bobthegas Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Hi all, Some advise on garlic please? At the moment i give garlic drops on the corn(Natural products) about four days a week. Should i give it seven days a week, as advised by a local fancier. OR Put five small bulbs in a two pint drinker only topping up the drinker every day, for a month, ive been told bulbs will be slimmy and water too but this is all good????? Any advise please or any other ideas will be greatly appreciated. Bob
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 GOOD QUESTION BOB I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW THEY USE THE FRESH BULBS AS WELL
Guest Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 I peel a garlic bulb and then place in the drinker and just leave it there, keep topping up the water.some might say this is wrong some might say its right but it works for me. It is a trick i do when breeding aswell as the birds drink far less water and fill the youngsters with more food.

THE FULL BULB OR JUST A SEGMENT OF IT ?AND HOW LONG DO YOU LEAVE IT IN FOR BEFORE YOU TAKE IT OUT
ALF Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 I PUT 3 CLOVES IN A COUPLE OF 2LTRS MILK JUGS AND LEAVE IT IN THERE TILL THE NEXT DAY AND POUR IT STRAIGHT IN THE DRINKERS AND JUST REFILL THE MILK JUGS...I UTOP UP THE SAME CLOVES FOR 3 DAYS THEN BIN THEM AND START WITH FRESH ONES
Guest Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 i put a full bulb in and leave it there until it has gone a 'gooey' and then change it and put another one in. Ill be doing this within the next few weeks and it will remain in there until finished breeding, every few weeks once a month you can clean out the bulb to get rid of the slime.
Guest Paulo Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 I get two bulbs and crush them place them in the drinker and pour water in. The water are bulbs are taken out next day and everything I give the birds garlic I do the above.
Guest Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 I've been experimenting with garlic for a few years now. First thing is the need to understand how it works. There is no allicin in a garlic bulb until you do something to it. And if you heat it, you kill it. To get garlic to produce allicin, it needs to be bruised and best way of doing that is to crush it. That causes two chemicals to react and produce allicin. The way I've been doing it ... since last week, always trying to improve ... is peel half a bulb, peel the cloves, and crush these into a pint jug with a little tap water in the bottom. Mash and liquid go into the jug, and the contents of the jug go into the dry drinker, and the drinker is topped up to 2 pints with tap water .. (a 2pt drinker). 1/2 a bulb is enough for a preventative. I do it twice a week, Saturday & Sunday. I double this to a whole bulb in a 2pt drinker if there's something working on the birds. i.e. half bulb for preventative, whole bulb for a cure, and probably over 7 days, rather than 2. And I like it to be fresh, so I never leave garlic water before the birds for more than a whole day. If they are being treated, I change drinker daily i.e. once per day, and use a whole bulb every day, for 7 days.
jimmy white Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 i usually take a couple of garlic cloves put them in a cotainer 3pt one , cold water added give it a good shake , then the next day tip a good 2or3 of tablespoonfulls in their water allmost every second day , make it up about fortnightly, but agree with bruno boiling it will take the allicin out, and renderit pretty usefull,, if you do happen to make it too strong they wont drink it or shy away from it ,, theil tell you themselves
collect500 Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 mine get 8 cloves a day fresh each day for 5 days a week dont crush them like some just smash with back of knife put the cloves into the water carrier night before leave then give to birds next day keith
jimmy white Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 meant to say that ,, crush each clove with side of knife b4 i put in container
aarden Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 which two days do they not have it in water kieth
Roland Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Pretty much agree with Bruno ... but too much Garlic, ot too often isn't good for the birds ... makes them thirsty.
Guest Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 Interesting post this one. Bruno what days do you use the garlic when racing? Do you still use it on a saturday, I usually have electrolits on saturdays and strike on sunday. Up till now when I used garlic I have been putting one garlic clove in a drinker with cuts in it for about five days. Then just changing water every day but have been wondering if this was the most effective way to do it. Very interested in how you have been doing it. Also very interesting points from roland about too much garlic making them thirsty so cutting my garlic intake down to 2 days from 5 will probably be the way to go with your method. I just want the most effective, beneficial way of giving garlic as I think it is the best thing since sliced bread.
Guest Paulo Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 I'm only giving garlic and cider for two days on my normal routine. Trying to have at least 3 days of just clean water in there.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 IS THE FRESH GARLIC BETTER THAN THE STUFF YOU BUY IN THE BOTTLES FROM PIGEON SUPPLIERS
Guest Paulo Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 cheaper and I would think fresh is better than something that has been processed
Ronnie Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 i take two cloves peel them and then put cuts in with a knife i then put them in a empty lucozade bottle put the lid back on and proceed to shake it for about ten min's .(they get all crushed and split to little piece's)i then top up bottle with water and empty contents in to a two litre drinker.I allways give fresh the next day as i believe garlic is off the onion family and will be a mild toxic if left for to long. I may be wrong but its what i do.

The water are bulbs are taken out next day and everything I give the birds garlic I do the above. I should point out I peel the cloves before I crush them and its two cloves.not bulbs I put in the drinker lol two bulbs the loft would stinK!
stevebelbin Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 Morrisons do a bag of frozen garlic for about 50p which lasts a good month, mine get a teaspoon of this 3-4 days a week and cider vinegar the other days. The frozen garlic is great, as its chopped already. One thing I would say is garlic seems to attract scum around the edge of the drinker, so they need to be washed properly every day.
Guest Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 IS THE FRESH GARLIC BETTER THAN THE STUFF YOU BUY IN THE BOTTLES FROM PIGEON SUPPLIERS I don't care what anyone says Tam, once you start processing and bottling garlic something good will be lost along the way. Can't get any better than fresh garlic just as mother nature made it. Soon as we start interfering with it, it's no longer the product we started with just a good money earner.
Roland Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 I believe that many lose sight of the fact Garlic is not a cure as such - may help in some cases i Guess - but is to build up an immune system. Once a week - even twice is more than ample. Mind when one looks at the bird's eyes etc. and alertness, one needs only fortnightly - I believe - to use garlic. Also minor immunisation, it purifies the blood, and hence cleanses that... can't be bad for the health, nor flying of course. Purer blood is I guess the main beneficilry.
Tony C Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 I'll not refute the good garlic can do our pigeons but its a fact they don't like it. For a pigeon to achieve top form its head has to be right as well as its body, does it bother them having to drink something they don't like? could it be the more times a week you give it to them the more your stifling their form. Just an alterative slant on the subject.

Roland Posted October 18, 2006 Report Posted October 18, 2006 Exactly Tony. And contentment is also a very big pointer.
