Guest Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 hi, the Deeside fed used to use them for years but sold them last year or the year before. contact me if you need further information.
Guest Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 cLOCKY, Have you thought about purchasing aluminium crates instead, we have them and they are so very easy to keep clean. We made belly pans to fit inside the crates and the pigeons stand on 1/2" x 1/2" galvanised mesh, which saves on purchasing crate dressings, the droppings go straight through to the floor of the pan and can be cleaned out very easily with a hose pipe.

Guest Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 Hi, I have just spoke to a fancier whoflew in the Deeside fed and sent his birds in plastic crates. He said they never had any problems with them and the fed used themfor over 20 years so they couldn't have been that bad!

Roland Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 Al and any Plastic should be shunned as far as I am concerned ... Why, because unlike wood it can't breathe, and anything that comes into contact stays on top, so easy for the spread of any fungal, bacteria etc. etc. to quickly spread. A hold over may be a worry as desiese would quickly become more apparent.
Tony C Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 Roland did hear through the grapevine (so take with a pinch of salt) that all wooden crates will have to be varnished to fall in line with DEFRA. Wouldn't this have the same affect.
Roland Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 May well do Tony ... if that is enforced and adhered to. Another little matter I find extradinary is the failure to use water pumps - I.e. like the Fish tnks yes. All water - on ours any way. is a single trough. Surely the time in this day and age is that when filled a plug is took out and a pump used to let it flow dstraight out. Then stopped of course ... and yes most vechiles carry water tanks, which can be easily filed up at any garage. Any water that is contaminated via any pigeon that is a carrier needs to cleared quickly. JMO
Guest Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 Agree with Tony, Roland, any surface can become contaminated. The point of plastic or aluminium design was that these incorporated easy clean and easy disinfection features. Believe Poultry trade use plastic baskets. George: Just repeating hearsay at moment: NW Fed reputedly had a single plastic basket away on a trial in one of the races. Said 'to have fallen to bits'. AGM is tomorrow and don't know If I can spare time to attend if I can I'll get back to you, meantime would agree with Gareth's suggestion that you contact Scott, he will be able to tell you if and why this prototype basket failed.
