Chairman Posted November 2, 2008 Report Posted November 2, 2008 No problems getting the birds to exercise, they fly extremely well, when I want to trap them I just remove the photo of the mother in law from of the landing board, just to think my missus will end up as ugly as her one day? I think I'll be a pigeon widow and get divorced before its to late?
GypUK Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 How do you teach them to trap so quickly?

ALF Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Yeah but how do you teach them where the trap is? mine wonder round on the shed roof until i open the shed door and don't use the trap? Keep them hungry and i mean hungry until they start to go through the trap..and if they dont come in let them sit out it wont do them any harm at the end of the day hunger will be the winner
just ask me Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Keep them hungry and i mean hungry until they start to go through the trap..and if they dont come in let them sit out it wont do them any harm at the end of the day hunger will be the winner [/q i put them in a hamper when they are real young when its time for there feed have it in the feeder with maybe a old hen or 2 feeding in loft then i put hamper on top of landing board open the hamper and just leave them drop in they wont hang around after a day or 2 when they know there's birds in the loft eating there grub all i do then is when there a bit older put hamper back 5 foot from landing board then leave them hop over to it they will drop in again then back 15 foot or so then they will fly over no probs i do this a few times a week building them up slowly to the 15 foot they will soon learn if they don't get it in it will be eat nice tip for ya
Peckedhen Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 When they are young, before they can fly, I put them out on the landing board one at a time. They hate being out on their own, they can see the others in the loft and they drop straight in. After a birds done it three times, I consider it trap trained. Obviously you need to watch and keep an eye out for predators.
Guest Freebird Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 I count 7 birds in 4 seconds on that clip.
ALF Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 I count 7 birds in 4 seconds on that clip. I counted 47 in under 10 secs on my ETS in through my y/b trap
Guest IB Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 I do something similar to peckedhen, main difference being mine is open door, and my ETS trap is inside the loft, on my corridor door. I basket my youngsters and start them inside the loft, in the aviary. Food is put down in their section, the corridor door is closed, trap opened, the basket flap goes down, and I call them in. They run to the feeder. I then take the basket outside, and in stages go further from the door, till they actually fly through it, and I follow them straight in to make sure they go through the trap right away. Doesn't take them long to associate flap going down, quick trap and food there waiting on them.
Guest Freebird Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 I counted 47 in under 10 secs on my ETS in through my y/b trap Wow!!! Must be more than one entrance though Alf(happy)
ALF Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Wow!!! Must be more than one entrance though Alf(happy) This is the only entrance on my y/b loft they all go through it on the way back from training/racing and i only have the 1 unikon ETS pad so they all go over it Freebird ;) ;)
stan p Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 alf i think that wants litlle bit of ajust with the two let boards or you could get a bird hurt ment
ALF Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 alf i think that wants litlle bit of ajust with the two let boards or you could get a bird hurt ment Stan i added the big landing board ( the bottom 1 ) to give the y/b's confidence to come down as i thought they were hesitant with only the small landing board but they just land on the bigger board and run in as they know if they are'nt in quick they dont get fed that day ps...never had any hurt as it is only a couple of inches jump to the trap so not had any problems
