robinthfc Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 Hello all..newby to the board here Every morning for the last few months, I have had a Magpie in my garden. It jumps around my garden, sometimes flying up to the front of my lofts, I have an old fashioned style lofts with wire on the front. My ratdog [jack Russell] runs out and chases it up when its in the garden, but it just flies up into the trees. I haven't seen it in the garden during the day much, but I have seen it lurking in the trees. Is it any threat to my pigeons?? especially when I have eggs and youngsters in the nest. If so what can I do ?..I've lived in this house over 35 years with pigeons and its the first time I've ever had this. Any advice will be helpful...thanks.

schouwman71 Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 might be one thats been hand reared,throw a ball at it,that might work,on the other hand while thats there you will not have any bother with hawks.

ticeye Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 i have seen them attacking young birds that are only out on top of the loft grey back crows are another one to watch as for not worrying about hawks when you have mapies about do not fool yourself the hawk will still attack
Guest Vic Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 I've had a pair nesting for the last eight years, in a an unusually high poplar tree next door but one.They have made their first nest redundant, and have built a new one, a couple of feet away fom it. I have had no problems whatsoever, they have even chased my ybs off the roof, which I appreciated at the time. The pigeons get used to them , no bother! I sometimes leave unwanted eggs out for them, which they readilly devour. Never had one in any of my lofts, so until it happens, I will leave well alone! Vic.

Guest Posted January 8, 2007 Report Posted January 8, 2007 I have magpies come about the garden now and again trying to raid the blackie´s nest and its their Warning calls that warn me somethings afoot . Basically, I just chase them and off they go.

I'll have to try and get rid of it, I don't really want it nesting around my garden using my eggs and young to feed its young
Roland Posted January 9, 2007 Report Posted January 9, 2007 I had 8/9 pairs maggies ... two nests got took over by crows, which meant 4 pairs of them. Now have a couple of Sparrow hawks less than a 200 yards away. So I hung a row of CD's u on a string back of house ... only ever see them after a few dull days. Loft often like a colourfull disco when sun hits. No nest now ether Maggies or Crows, and only see a pair of crows once in a while .... hawks moved them on - yeah I know and have seen the crows bomb and chase the hawks... yill hawks serious or viaing for food - pigeons loft of 1000 odd across the road. HoHold a cd in hand - when given chance and sun is out - and reflect the light at the maggies or crows ... they up and away.
