crazy pigeon boy Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 hi all i hope you can help me i have just moved my lofts from the location i have had for 5 years to a new location at the back of my house around 4 miles away from the original location i need to know how to get my birds to fly back to this new location and not to the old location and how to stop them from going back there
ALF Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 do you still have a loft at the old location or somewhere you can get them in at the old place???
stevebelbin Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 If the old loft is still there, then it is simply a case of pairing the birds up, letting them bring a round of ybs up and then when there driving for the next set of eggs, start to let them out. Cocks first with the hens locked in the box so theres an incentive to stay at the new loft. Keep them really hungry as well. They will go straight back to the old loft, where you should retrieve them straight away and never feed them there. Take them straight back to the new loft and do the same again. If theres any awkward cocks, leave them at the old loft for a day or two with no corn or water and they will return to the new loft pretty sharpish . Its best to do this with hens when there sitting about 5-10 days as their normally pretty kean at this time. It will also help to allow the birds into a temporary aviary while their on their first brood, so they can have a good look around and get plenty of fresh air ;D. Fly them on widowhood and they will fly there bollocks of for you as they will go to and fro from the new to the old loft .
crazy pigeon boy Posted January 22, 2007 Author Report Posted January 22, 2007 yes there is a small shed there that use to be my stock loft do i just let the birds out or do i need to do some thing before that i really have no clue what to do or how to do it

Roland Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 Is the old loft still up? If so will the new owners allow you to retrieve your birds twice a week? Birds must and will be broken in within three days if one wants them to perform in all races to their new home. This may mean retrieving and letting out every three days. They must feel safe and quickly become content. Take the out their new loft and show them ... perferable over looking. then leave tib - bits in the loft and pass them through the traps, don't over feed. 3rd day let them out hungry.
Roland Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 Pigeons never forget where they were born... to break them in they must want, and perfer their new home!
jimmy white Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 build a make shift aviary , get them down on eggs ,,take the aviary away, dont let them in old place,, theyll be back ok
crazy pigeon boy Posted January 23, 2007 Author Report Posted January 23, 2007 ok thank you for your advice i'll give it ago
Ronnie Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 i bought some belgium young birds the week before christmas i had them three days when one got out(flew over my head). It came back the next day at feeding time was a bugger to get it in the shed but it went in eventually. It was sat on the sputniks looking out of the shed for those three days prior to getting out.
madmaxlofts Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 what about letting them out when they go back get them in after a few times ov them going back and forth theyll get a line ov flight then dont let them in the old place anymore theyll soon go back expecialy if on young or eggs
Pompey Mick Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 Break the cocks off first, open the loft with the hens locked in their boxes, don't let any hens out until the cocks are returning and they are all settled to their new nest boxes. My cocks only returned once to their old loft, once they were settled it took another two nights to settle the hens. Don't let the cocks out hungry , the lure of the hens should be enough.
