Guest TAMMY_1 Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 How far do you think your clubs first race should start at, we start at about 58 miles and i think a shorter race is best to begin with.Would you rather it was longer or shorter ?
Guest Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 our first race Tam is hereford 69 miles to me (Wrexham & dist Federation) we have a race point used in previuos years Ludlow at 46 miles , i would be happier starting there , especially with the youngbirds ;D andy
Wiley Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 id prefere to start from newark myself 114 miles
Tony C Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 I think with the weather being so unpredictable this time of year for pre season training as well as the first race itself, 70 miles to me is just about right. A bad first race would have repercussions throughout the rest of the season for both fanciers & federations
Guest CS Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 We start at 58 miles but we don't send birds to 58 miles, feels like training to us.... Second week; Mansfield at 85 miles...we prefer start at 85 miles.
stevebelbin Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 Im away for the first few races, so mine will start from Huntingdon, Ive lost track of how far it is to me, think its about 150miles. That should wake them up a bit lol
ALF Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 65 mls and just about right for the big kick off
Guest Posted April 5, 2007 Report Posted April 5, 2007 Think it really depends on spread of your Fed. North West Fed programme starts at Coldstream which is 62 miles to me in Laurieston, but its nearer 80 miles to Stirling and I guess nearer 100 miles to Strathblane (Crieff).
madmaxlofts Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 ours is 52 miles from sleaford a glorified training toss realy i would ov liked to started at peterborough 82 miles
sj irving jnr Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 our first race with the solway fed is shap which is approx 45miles,on the same day we also have a race from appleton with the west cumbria fed which is 117miles and they come just as good out of there as shap for the first race.
tubbles Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 We are racing from Ludlow (70 miles) tomorrow, it was supposed to be Hereford (90 miles) but we have been told that the site is booked for something else so we have been chased back to Ludlow. This would be fine for youngbirds but I personally don't think much to a 70 mile race to start off with for old birds. Luckily the forecast says north winds and a bit of North east on way home, so that could take some of the fly out of them at the home end. If it were a south wind from 200 miles it is close but from just 70 miles there would have been bigger gaps because of birds being full of it. Realistically though i suppose if i am 2 mins behind tomorrow i will be able to moan about the short race. LOL we are never happy. :)

doos r us Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 dont think distance is the issue its the weather and the quality of training you get in still think 2nd week may is best to start o/b racing as the weather sept/oct has been good enough recently to extend y/b racing
peterpau Posted April 6, 2007 Report Posted April 6, 2007 Don't think distance is the main concern. Weather the main decider for me. would be happy to go 150 miles with the right weather. We normaly start at Taunton 122 miles and miss the first two from Bath. This year however the birds are ready now. If the weather were good we would send to the first race next week.
