As of today the RPRA was told Blackpool is also off until the situation is reviewed at the end of December, still find that hard to believe though due to the amount of money stood to be lost.

i think [and hope] once peter bryant gets his teeth in to this , this meeting at the end of dec. could possibly favour the fanciers for the blackpool show, providing,,there are no more outbreaks

as you say chrissy, there is a lot of money to be lost , so we can only live in hope and try not to look at the negative side ,,,,,,so heres hoping

The year certainly won't be the same without Blackpool, just hoping it will be sorted by then :)

Propotionally there is a lot of money to be lost with any show, the one commong up at Cupar in Fife is on it's final chance I hear, this could be the nail in the coffin for it, some on this w/e will have paid for halls, accomodation, buses ect so might be a great loss to these people, Peter Bryant or whoever should be fighting their corner as well not just the prime events.

If blackpool has been called off how comes Telford is still going through this weekend? :-/

If it is, it will be a kick in the teeth to many, especially the ones cancelled at the same time

Typical of DEFRA, clout the minority interests with no good reason.

To ban Pigeon shows is  an unnecessary knee-jerk reaction when all recent scientific evidence points to the fact that pigeons are extremely resistant to this disease and are classified as a 'No Transmission' species by the EU in recent vaccination trials.

To be put in the 'especially high risk' category by Hilary Benn

(Quote: In addition, the national general licences permitting bird gatherings in England, Scotland and Wales have been revoked, and no bird shows and pigeon racing will be permitted for the time being. We have taken this measure nationwide as bird gatherings pose an especially high risk of onward spread of disease.)

is just not scientifically justified, it is in fact a blatant lie, all known evidence says otherwise.

Representation must be made to DEFRA to explain why Pigeons have been summararily categorised in this fashion.

DEFRA had 2 arguments, Ben. (1) Pigeons could become infected and spread the disease (2) Pigeons could carry the virus on 'dirt' on their feet & feathers.

I think we have basically won argument (1) - Pigeons may become infected with H5N1, but they die without spreading it; the virus can't multiply enough to spread to another bird, even a chicken. Been proved beyond doubt.

We are stuck in argument (2) cos DEFRA vets think racing pigeons when racing touch down before coming home and could pick up the virus on their feet & feathers. Even if they did touch down, and it was an infected area, the sun & drying effect of the wind in flight would dry out & kill the virus. Thats why DEFRA won't allow pigeons to even 'fly over' infected areas in France.

Can't give you any reason that makes sense to ordinary people, Ben, but this is DEFRA we are dealing with.

DEFRA's initial reason in 2006 was that Channel Islands are too close to mainland Europe [France] and of course there was AI there then.

But Channel Islands have been that close to France for millions of years, so what's the big deal now? Also there's been AI in France, AI in England, but not in the Channel Islands.  So closeness or far far way, neither has any bearing on spread of AI, cos it was 10000's miles away in SE Asia in August 2005, but in January 2006 it had spread to western Europe. :-/
