Guest Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 BLACKPOOL BETTER GO ON OR IM NOT PAYING 150 QUID FOR A JOLLY WEEKEND As of today the RPRA was told Blackpool is also off until the situation is reviewed at the end of December, still find that hard to believe though due to the amount of money stood to be lost.

Pompey Mick Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Typical of DEFRA, clout the minority interests with no good reason. To ban Pigeon shows is an unnecessary knee-jerk reaction when all recent scientific evidence points to the fact that pigeons are extremely resistant to this disease and are classified as a 'No Transmission' species by the EU in recent vaccination trials. To be put in the 'especially high risk' category by Hilary Benn (Quote: In addition, the national general licences permitting bird gatherings in England, Scotland and Wales have been revoked, and no bird shows and pigeon racing will be permitted for the time being. We have taken this measure nationwide as bird gatherings pose an especially high risk of onward spread of disease.) is just not scientifically justified, it is in fact a blatant lie, all known evidence says otherwise. Representation must be made to DEFRA to explain why Pigeons have been summararily categorised in this fashion.
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 any way i thought pigeons couldnt carry it and 2 they onli controol the birds in a 10 mile radius of the infected areas
Guest Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 any way i thought pigeons couldnt carry it and 2 they onli controol the birds in a 10 mile radius of the infected areas DEFRA had 2 arguments, Ben. (1) Pigeons could become infected and spread the disease (2) Pigeons could carry the virus on 'dirt' on their feet & feathers. I think we have basically won argument (1) - Pigeons may become infected with H5N1, but they die without spreading it; the virus can't multiply enough to spread to another bird, even a chicken. Been proved beyond doubt. We are stuck in argument (2) cos DEFRA vets think racing pigeons when racing touch down before coming home and could pick up the virus on their feet & feathers. Even if they did touch down, and it was an infected area, the sun & drying effect of the wind in flight would dry out & kill the virus. Thats why DEFRA won't allow pigeons to even 'fly over' infected areas in France.
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 stupid my m8 in gurnsey befor the outbrake happened wasnt allowed to birng birds over to show inless they were quarantined for 28 days but he could bring them over with out quarantined to sell now if he sold me a pigeon and i transfered it i culd show it in 14 days with no objection so what is the point in that ban on gurnsey

DEFRA's initial reason in 2006 was that Channel Islands are too close to mainland Europe [France] and of course there was AI there then. But Channel Islands have been that close to France for millions of years, so what's the big deal now? Also there's been AI in France, AI in England, but not in the Channel Islands. So closeness or far far way, neither has any bearing on spread of AI, cos it was 10000's miles away in SE Asia in August 2005, but in January 2006 it had spread to western Europe. :-/
