T_T
Have just read an article in the daily paper claiming that Pigeon fanciers will have to pay rates on the sheds where there they store their race baskests. New tax rules allow only sports clubs to be exempt from paying and because pigeon racing isn't ( so they say ) classed as a sport, 50,000 bird owners will have to fork out. Guest dogeon
The Royal Pigeon Racing Association is a national organisation representing the sport of of pigeon racing in England. We are privileged to have Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as our patron. For over a century the Royal Pigeon Racing Association has been at the heart of pigeon racing in England, and we look forward to representing and supporting our loyal membership in the new millenium. Guest
Quite topical, only last week BHW carried a Confederation Article that English Sport had turned down our application to join [maybe a good thing that!] but that we were now a member of a sport & recreation organisation. Fair Play
Unfortunately as I can remember Pigeon Racing was never classed as a sport definition was a "HOBBY"
THE PRIEST
Have you seen a list of what they are calling a sport...Arm wrestling....Baton twirling..Model aircraft flying..Rambling....and skipping if these can be classified as sports then racing pigeons have got to be a sport. Who decided this one.. THE FOOLS >
Webmaster
Pigeon racing has never been recognised as a sport. I have seen responses from Sport England and other bodies that the reason is that pigeon racing involves little human physical exertion, and that is their stumbling block. The news story is in response to in change in policy to start charging business rates on sports clubs* and village halls. *sports clubs however can apply for a dispensation. From the BBC in 2005: 'Give pigeon racing sport status' http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/4089900.stm 'Minister's advice on pigeon call' http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/4114816.stm
