Guest Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 Am considering taking on a rescue greyhound and would be interested to know if anyone on here has any experience of rehabilitated racing greyhounds? They make great pets apparently and over 20,000 of them every year find themselves in rescue thrown away by the racing industry, they are the lucky ones, many more are just put down before they even reach 3 years old.
Guest chrisss Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 my dad and kid sister both had rescued greyhounds for years very placid and made great pets once they settled down [they had never been in a house before]
Guest Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 Thanks Chriss,am going to see them at the rescue centre on saturday, can't wait ;D
Guest gladdo Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 best pet dog of all time ... i had a race dog and it was rehomed in my uncles and they love it to this day ... they love sitting on sofa in front of the fire and just sleeping all day until the neighbours cat walks past !!!!!!!!!! superb pets ....
westburylofts Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 Hi Chrissy I have in the past worked in racing kennels for 8 years, Greyhounds make great pets, i had one for over 10 years as a pet. but rember they will need house training, they make great pets and are so happy to just lay about and love attension. Would like to also point out that the kennels that i worked in never put a dog to sleep after they had finished racing, they where all rehomed, and if the new owners had any problems with them they came back to us to be rehomed again. some people do not rearlise they can dislike cats and very small dogs. if you do have another dog then take it with you to the kennals then when you take a dog you like for a walk you can introduce them to each other and see if they will get on, my other bit of advice would be to make sure the greyhound is muzzled when you take it out for walks until you are happy that he will do what you want him to do, Hope this is helpful to you And good luck Ray

Chrissy !!!!!!! If you pick one with the right temprement, it will be a terrific pet for you & your family etc, & you will get years of enjoyment from it, with a bit of luck. The poor old greyhound, is a very maligned animal, unfortunately in this day & age we live now. Enjoy.
celtic Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 Great pets , no two ways about it, which kennels are you thinking of getting one from ?
Tony C Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 I had one for nine years and dont regret one minute of it, wonderful pets.

Hi great that you have drawn attention to this subject and i am sure some good will come of it,In 2007 nearly 4,500 greyhounds have been homed by the Retired greyhound trust. the figures have grown in the last five years from 2,608 in2003 3,920in 2006 to 4,479 in 2007.other trusts and racetracks are active in finding homes we our selfs have managed to find homes for 11 in the past 12 months. yes the figures are a small pecentage of the waistage and horse racing has a simular problem with over production of foals. The Retired Greyhound trust , can be contacted on www.retiredgreyhounds.co.uk...or tel 0844 8268424.

Roland Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 Great pets ... also best cat detterent when cats are on the ground... Greyhounds don't have time to stop when cat archies it's back to fend them off. Will keep you fit too walking them.
pjc Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 Mark, far to many dogs end up in rescue centres but there are also a lot that get put down before getting that far. Dogs that are dumped or picked up by wardens etc go to a local pound where they are given a short period of time to be claimed, if they are not claimed and the pound do not have a rescue centre able to take the dogs they are put down what ever they are. Phil
Guest Vic Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 Pity we didn't have our pc's, when the carthorse went to the continental tables.
pjc Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 gardens not big enough for a couple of cart horses!

Phil remember a greyhound has a ear tatoo that is registered to the owner you just cant dump them as the number in there ear can be traced back to the owner.
Guest Vic Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 gardens not big enough for a couple of cart horses! Yes! But you can't learn an old dog new tricks. e.g. Where to cock their Dicks! ;D ;D

pjc Posted March 7, 2008 Report Posted March 7, 2008 hmmm, yes Vic! I was refering to dogs in general Mark, prob is we have even come accross dogs that have been chipped, pounded, taken in by rescue centres then rehomed without antbody checking for chips! When 1 dog did get scanned for some reason it had been reported lost by its owners over 200 miles away 2 yrs earlier and could have been reunited within hours if t had been scanned. Makes you wonder if they would spot a tatoo.
