How do you stop the little darlings from nesting on the floor?!

Despite there being six spare empty nest boxes, I've got two pairs deciding that the cold floor is a much better option !

Any ideas?

As jas siad lock them in a box  let them out after 2 days but then lock them in at night. That should get them used to there own box and make them feel that the box belongs to them. hope this helps.

Hard to stop, I find it happens when they already have youngsters in the nestbowl even though I give them a second bowl. ::)

I let them lay their first egg on the floor then lock the hen in the nest box on the second day so that she lays in the nestbowl there. Put the first egg in with her and she should sit them both.

if its the first round then lock them in, once she has laid her 1st egg the hen will return to the box and the cock will follow. If they are yearlings and you are using widowhood boxes then cover 1/2 of the box so the bowl is hidden and they will settle better, they like quiet and privacy.

have a pair of yearlings myself trying to nest on the floor...best to lock them in a nest box over night and keep letting them out during the day if you can keep an eye on them...if they go back to the box lock them in again  for a while,if they dont catch them and lock them in...you dont really want them nesting on the floor,if another birds young happens to get out of nest nestbox on to floor  they will attack it and could cause it some real damage...

I have had this happen with a couple of pairs of modenas, I tried returning them to the box without success if it happens now I just place a small board around the area to keep the young bird sin place and let them get on with it cos there is no point in fighting them if they are determined!!!!

Yes well that's it if they are determined to have their young on the floor, there is nothing that will stop them from laying on the floor again and again. We just keep a closer eye on them.

We've had several that chose the floor over the nesting bowls on their first eggs too, they have all been fine so i wouldn't worry much.  Maybe it is just a preference for them ;D

leave them on the floor dose not hurt anything

Except when they lay in front of the door at the entrance to the loft and they keep getting moved everytime you open the door.  :-/

If they do that just put a nest bowl under the eggs and move the bowl away from the original nest by about 6-12 inches every day until it's in a corner out the way ;)
