I hope to be busy converting the 8 X 10 into a loft...Have ordered tons of stuff for the loft but will have a go at making the nest boxes and traps myself.

At the moment I am leaning to keeping tipplers and tumbles. I only really want to keep the birds as a hobby and have no interest in racing. After reading about the racing pigeons on here I don't think I'm up to all this separation of cocks and hens and youngsters. Keeping some in the dark. There was none of this when I kept racing pigeons 50 ish years ago...So I may start with the fancy stuff as I did all those many years ago.

Scoobybob !!!!! Sounds like a pretty exciting time to me here, that your about to enter into etc. Don't worry to much about keeping tipplers/tumblers sort of thing, I have know doubt  ;D ;D ;D, you will have a great deal of fun & enjoyment with them, & being only a wee lad  ;) ;) ;) they will give a good reason to get out of bed each day, to attend to your little flock. Who will rely on you, for there daily sustenance.

Enjoy.

Well it never went to plan today. :-/ Shed wagon came getting me all excited but as it was being unloaded I could see a side panel was missing. So checked the other panels and found the side panel I had was only 8’ instead of being 10’…. ::)

So one side panel wrong size and the opposite side panel missing…Not a great start. :'(

scooby doo , you dont have to keep cocks and hens apart or even young birds , you can keep them all in one section , and darkness , well thats your choice, its called the complete natural system , plenty fanciers still doing it

The two 10’ side sections I required arrived today.  ;D Well tonight at about 18:30 Got a little carried away and erected the shed. (Torch, hammer and nails great fun)  ;)Just have to felt it and do a few finishing touches tomorrow. I will than start on the traps, perches and nest boxes so its still a few days before I can even think of getting any birds.

best of luck with birds & loft , as other s have said keeping pigeons is great what ever type you keep . some for looking at ,some for flying around &  some for racing  in  fact you could alway keep a few of each  ::)

This sounds a good idea...Something I will think about seriously.

Good luck mate I am almost at the same stage.Off to see huts to day

Went to see a loft last night, but it was not what i required 8 ft wide just to much for the space i have.

Intend to buy a 8x6 and add a 4ft aviary.Depends what kind of framing need as near to 2x2 as i can get.

Dont get me wrong would love to have built the loft from scratch, however not as fit as i once was "o" how i hate growing old.

Still happy days ahead, my son has just returned from London so I will at least get a hand.

Looking forward to having the birds after a 8 year break

Happy days

Your not far behind me Rab... ;) I ordered an 8 X 6 at first then changed my mind and put the loft sideways so as then I could change to a 10 X 8. The traps will be made this weekend which will cover  the four window area 6' X 2' X 2' I will be using bob wires but in my day these were coat hangers shaped into a U with a pair of staples. ;D

looks a nice shed!

If the floor is tongue and groove as it looks then put some ply sheets down as they will be easier to clean unless you are using deep litter!

Yea it is tongue and groove but looks a very tight fit so no small gaps between the groves, but it is something to think about. If I find it difficult doing the cleaning I will cover the boards with ply.

Bought 2 pieces of ply today at B&Q for the traps 6' X 2' £11 each...Price of timber is going through the roof.

you will get 8x4 shuttering ply cheaper from a builders merchant.

The gaps may look tight now but will either open up when the floor drys out or may swell around the drinker if it gets damp or water gets spilt.

I will take your advice and look for plywood after easter, after all the ply for the floor does not need to be that thick as its only a covering.

but easier to put it down now before you start putting a partition etc in the loft.

It looks good anyway, well done and good luck with it!

a daft one i know but have you got any building sites near you the reason is simple they are building flats just of to the right behind me [if you get my drift] i thought i would try my luck and ask about some scrap bits [for the floor of one of my sheds] before i knew it a forklift was putting 12 sheets of 8x6 half inch ply over the fence so it is always worth asking

I have to hire a large van next Thursday to move a friend...(I only drive no lifting for me.) Might be a good opportunity to get a few sheets of ply home from the local builders yard. Always comes in handy for perches and nest boxes as well as the floor.
