Tenny Posted July 9, 2008 Report Posted July 9, 2008 A BIRD IN SWEDEN FLEW 751 MILES ON DAY. MIND YOU THEY WHERE LIB @ 1.30AM AND THEY GOT LONGER DAYS THAN US!
Guest Vic Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 It doesnt get dark sometimes in the Scandanavian countries. Let's talk sense. Even in OZ they can compile some extraordinary velocities, with birds flying over vast areas in the moonlight. But as in football statistics, we are looking for true facts. Especially in central Europe. It seems that the pigeons from Tarbes , set up some incredible records. Mickey Mouse countries aside, (sorry lennut) Has the 750 mile on the day ever been achieved on the continent? ie Belgium, Holland, Germany etc. I have a feeling it has!
Guest Vic Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 May I add, and I do honestly believe, that if there were more of you Jocks in the RPRA, , and flying in the NFC, you would have had 900 milers on the day into Scotland. Some great flyers north of the border, without a doubt. Sad to see you disjointed at the moment.
andy Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Yes Andy we were 1st west section 4th open to Dennis that year 1990 it was a gale of a west /North west wind and remember A Deans saying to me that he had never seen a wind as strong as that in all the time he had kept pigeons in a race from France. Still have the fresh memories of him being on the roof and timing him in. Cheers PS Bring back Niort 673 miles Why not bring it back Gareth for the guys that want these distances. Too far for me though. I would need to come and get some doos from you to compete. Cheers

Give the doos a long distance to fly with slightly dodgy weather especially if they have hills or water to cross at the end of a long fly and you need natural pigeons, more often than not a hen. If Gareth won't give you any(only kidding Gareth) give "me" a shout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Giving my age away here but I am sure a partnership from Annan (Glendinning and someone) were roundabout 162nd open NFC Nantes in the early seventies. So you maybe right Vic perhaps one of the Scottish doos going to Saintes with the NFC will put up a heart stopping performance. It would certainly be a great boost for distance racing after this last weekend!

Aye yer right ME widowhood cocks on widowhood give there all on the day, and they will give you 15-16 hours on the right day if the breeding is there. I know this statement might not read correct but there is fanciers flying widowhood, they just haven't told there doos that. This is why I hate the late or mid-day liberations, but you cant please everyone.

No exactly what you mean Andy have even done it myself with success but the forecast had to be right, if it looked dodgy weather wise just kept him in the loft for another day. Great cock mind you still miss him.!
Blue Chequer Pied Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Ritchie & Whyte timed on the day from Nantes in 1977, 723 miles vel 1594.
me Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Ritchie & Whyte timed on the day from Nantes in 1977, 723 miles vel 1594. Great doo no doubt about it, but if they gave "me" the choice I would have taken "Storm Queen" found in the loft (second day right enough) and still managed to be second open Nantes, the original North Section superstar without a doubt!
rednyellow Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Not sure Bart you will need to ask a fifer but I dont think so. Len Downie is the best all-round flyer in Fife for the last 3 or 4 years by a mile.....that comments bound to upset one or two but its true.yes definately the same man 1st open nantes snfc 1988, i remember the race very well sending 4 birds and winning the region,3 birds clocked in just over an hour and a half 614mls on the shift, stayed up all night and timed the 4th bird a 10yr old hen at 5.35am,was only 21 at the time, timed 4 birds 2 weeks later from sartilly 511mls again on the shift, the glory days, not to many birds about these days that have flown 500,600 mls on the day into scotland wonder why? :( wee trip down memory lane. :)

Believe "me" this is possibly the most important thing, giving a few decent doos the chance to gain a bit of confidence getting back from over the channel.

Got to disagree with the blaw hame ME, I prefer a light N/W wind. Its on the nose I know, but in June & July usually a good racing day with sunshine & broken cloud and they usually come straight on line and the winners do 540 miles at about 40-41 mph. Now thats widowhood cock weather.

Can't agree more many many good pigeons bred down from her. I was gifted an inbred hen from Bob Whyte when I was still at school that was inbred to Storm Queen and she bred winners for me from the off. Fantastic birds.
Guest Vic Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 Good luck, to one and all. I can't say it, like Burns'y. But it's the glorious 12th by the way, this Saturday! lol

Now thats widowhood cock weather. Depends on how warm it is Andy "Blaw Hames" tend to bring the right conditions for good returns especially over in the west/central part of the country. On the other hand the "east" tends to be blessed with better "high pressure" weather conditions, but your point that you can get good races with good returns with north west winds is true. HOWEVER if you look at the records, "high pressure" and light south west winds are still the most benign and benifical to our birds.
jimmy white Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 Hi Guys, What is the furthest a pigeon has been recorded, flying on the day into Great Britain? The latest Tarbes result had some outstanding pigeons on the result sheet, flying vast distances. B.Denny had a few flying 748 miles on the day, and "Ribbles" performance was also brilliant, as was Brezzys pigeon from Liverpool. WOW! excellant pigeons, in fact fantastic pigeons. as far as snfc record ,, i think bart is right in his post
Roland Posted July 11, 2008 Report Posted July 11, 2008 The furthest flying national winner into Scotland is Dennis Dall who won Niort a distance of 697 miles although it was a second day pigeon. The furthest winning DAY pigeon timed was that of Donaldson & Downie from Rattray at 650 miles from Nantes in 1988.

I have the Scottish Bible ''' Scotland's own' and will have to get it down and dusted over the week end I guess.
