jimmy white Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 travelling over to old mums through a country road [langloan rd , for any in this district] with fields on each side , i allways have seen many, many pigeons scouting these fields , well over 500 , on this occasion all were flying in one batch , then , split , then went unusualy high ,,,,,,,,then i saw the perigrines , two of them , these hawks were just playing with these pigeons , some were grabbed in mid air ,then let go, [only to drop to the ground] this pair of perigrines must have killed about 5 pigeons ,the pigeons were all over the place ,yet didnt go away, some flew in to some trees , some down to a house in the feild , they then went to the feild on the other side of the road , then the same was happenning there , the perigrines were catching them then letting them go , some were killed others managed to fly off again , all this happened in about 15 mins , if this were a fed liberation , i wouldnt have thought many would have got home , i cant say ive seen anything quite like it , not one of the perigrines ate one bird on the ground, they just drifted away into the distance . leaving the odd little batches flying off , does anyone know of this type of behaviour in these type of hawks??
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 its happened to me at my own loft!
OLDYELLOW Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 If there good hunters they'll kill for fun , they usualy eat the best bits and move on to next prey , seems when the larders full they can waist as much as they like
Guest mikkey Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 thats pretty strange, i thought falcons , hawks etc only hunted when they needed to eat not for fun but i suppose thats the strange world we live in

Guest spin cycle Posted November 21, 2008 Report Posted November 21, 2008 a while back while driving i saw a kestrel 'mobbing' a hawk that had killed a magpie...trying to drive it off the kill. at the time i assumed it was a sparrowhawk...but it could have been a peregrine as it was in an open field.

Chairman Posted November 22, 2008 Report Posted November 22, 2008 Once caught the wife with her purse open, before i could reach for my camera and photograph its contents she clasped it shut faster than a bolt of lightening. Has most married men will know this a very rare occurence. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)
jimmy white Posted November 22, 2008 Author Report Posted November 22, 2008 jimmy do you rem my post about the lap wing's being killed for sport , 11 of them in 2hrs by 1 percy yes i do remember your post ch pd , this was something similar , these perigrines looked like the were def on the job , like acrobats and like lightening , i had never actually saw a hawk swooping up the way , they were going all ways , and really looked as though they meant bussiness, yes i remember your post well [it should still be on, way back, can you remember roughly when you posted it?

jimmy white Posted November 22, 2008 Author Report Posted November 22, 2008 my mate a game keeper he said the just keep killing and killing drop everthing and g back and eat the best bites the will even eat of a carcus 4 days just looking through the posts , this may well be true , as there wasnt a pigeon to be seen their today , ill be travelling that same road quite often now , so it will be interesting to see when and if these pigeons return ,allthough they were ferals , there were many different colours , so i would imagine there would be racing pigeons among them [if i had been younger and fitter i would have searched these fields ]
jimmy white Posted November 22, 2008 Author Report Posted November 22, 2008 http://forum.pigeonbasics.com/m-1194734505/s-0/ bang on,, tony to the rescue ;D i remember writting in to this nature programme ,,, thanks tony ;D
