rasbull Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 I have a video of my birds feeding and was wondering if someone could please help me cure a problem my birds have. When they eat there necks and throats puff up as if they are struggling to swallow. I have tried alsorts to cure them. I have treated for canker, tablet and liquid form, they have had nystatin for candida infection. I have tried cider vinegar to cure any yeast infection. I have treated for worms as well. I am at a complete loss as to why the birds do this. The symptoms last for about 2 minutes during and following eating. If anyone wants to view the video of the birds eating please send request at rasbull@hotmail.co.uk and I will forward the video. It is only 2 mins long but does show the exact symptoms I am trying to describe and cure. I do hope someone has experienced the same thing and could possibly tell me how to cure my problem. I have forwarded the video to various pigeon vets and also have had swobs taken. Thank You.

nogin Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Hi, the birds are being fed a regular mix which does include maize. YOU HAVENT GOT A PROBLEM THE BIRDS ARE FINE AND HEALTHY
rasbull Posted January 19, 2009 Author Report Posted January 19, 2009 I wish i didn't but 8 or 9 of them display the symptoms the cheq cock on the aviary display. The swallowing like that is not right. They should be able to eat there food without trying to push it down, balloon theirs necks and throats!
maverick Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 where is the water for the birds as it looks like pickstone in the fountain
rasbull Posted January 19, 2009 Author Report Posted January 19, 2009 Hi, its just on the right hand side of the open door.
Guest ljb107 Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 my birds do it too, they are just trying to eat too fast, tell them to slow down!
Wiley Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 rasbull get a photo up of the corn your feeding at the moment, as im sure it could just be gorging themselves to much on maize to quickly
Roland Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Well hardly, to never ever saw it.... but now it seems to be rife. Indeed very many lofts have their birds doing now. Why? Seems to be a new thing too. :-/
john@formula 1 lofts Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 I can not get video up athe moment as at work but if you feed big seeds this does happen i.e dog tooth maize or horse beans even some times on barley if it is long piece. are they flying ok how is the droppings and how do they look in general if all ok i would say they are fine. Cheers John
rasbull Posted January 19, 2009 Author Report Posted January 19, 2009 Hiya John, the droppings look perfect although the birds do appear to have lost some condition the last 3/4 weeks. But this could be the colder weather. I had the droppings tested and they come back all clear. I did a throat swob as well and this was showing yeast and small bacteria count. I treated with Y40 and Protril (the products advised) but this did not improve the birds symptoms. They are all stock birds so dont go out, so unable to answer that. I would say I have a definite problem with them. I have keep birds for 10 years and never experienced this before.
Guest IB Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Similar thread a few weeks back, with pictures. Was down to poor storage of feeding, in an open bin, and it got damp. Any link there with your problem?
rasbull Posted January 19, 2009 Author Report Posted January 19, 2009 Hi, I did post a thread on here regarding this same problem way back months ago. I thought at the time it could have been damp corn. Have you the date or name of the thread so I can check it out please?

OLDYELLOW Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 If you had your birds test then why didnt the vet treat them ? its ok knowing from which ailments your birds have but they need to be treated with products that work , a vets lab will test to see what the yeast / bacteria responds too and therefore illiminate the problem straight away , some drugs remidies may actualy give bacteria an ideal breeding ground to mulitply
rasbull Posted January 19, 2009 Author Report Posted January 19, 2009 Hi, I had the samples tested through the post, and they presribed the treatment. I am waiting on a second set of results coming back tomorrow (Lizzie Rigsby)I have tried all kinds of vets to see if the are able to help me. My local ones said they didnt deal with pigeons and would not do the swob tests for me. They passed me onto an avian vet in Cardiff who said they werent really clued up on pigeons and to try a vet in Usk. I have not heard back from them! I tried a number I had for a Tom Pennycott in Scotland but he didnt take the birds through the post. I have contacted two very well known vets from the pigeon world - Dr Wim Peters and Dr Colin Walker. But getting a vet around this area to be able to sort my problem out is just a nightmare. If anyone knows of a vet that would be able to help me please could I have there details. Cheers

rasbull Posted January 19, 2009 Author Report Posted January 19, 2009 I have just phoned and obtained the results of the second set of samples I sent off. They said the birds have a small reading of cocci and a small reading of yeast in the droppings. Everything else come back clear. Maybe the two products did clear up the yeast and small bacteria sample I had in the throat sample on the first tests. I will treat for the cocci now, and then I think I am going to buy a bag of peas and let them eat these and give the birds a break from the barley and maize. Maybe there throats are sore from these and having a break will improve this. Any ideas?
OLDYELLOW Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 after treating as you will know good bacteria gets depleated perhaps giving them some live natural yoghurt will help to regain the gut flora and balance the birds metabolism i would add some brewers yeast as well and add this to the corn , i dont feed maize at this time of year
rasbull Posted January 19, 2009 Author Report Posted January 19, 2009 What feed do people think I should feed if trying to avoid Maize and Barley for the time being to be sure the birds still getting the appropriate nurishment. Regarding the live yogurt, how would you give this to the birds?
