Old birds n house roof

Hi all,

 

New to the forum, My name is paul, from shropshire,

Been racing for the last three years with no previous experiance, its been a struggle but I love this sport I wish I got involved years ago, I have a problem with my old bird landing on my house roof, local fancy have told me to wave flags or throw tennis balls at em, I put a tennis ball through my conservatory roof going this!!! , no matter how long I stand there they will land as soon as I go in the house on the roof, this really stresses me out.

 

has anyone got a really good idea on how to stop them roofing, my young birds are ok as I have got the hang of training them properly but the old birds seem to have old habits that I cannot break.Ahhhh.

paul if you starve and i mean starve fo3 days let out then callin keep doing this they will soon stop roofing feed small amount when they come in if one stays out no food they will learn fast

i agree chris well i live in house with smallgarden when i brought birds down from loft at farm nothing but trouble with roofing not any more

you can stop them by tieing some thing like a small toy fluffy  dog on a long srting then throw it over the roof ,then let them out , when they land on the roof  just pull it back over like it is trying to chase them ,they wont take long to stop going on the roof if you do this for a week or two.ATB les.

oh its sure to work but you must stic firm do not give seed outside loft and be mean with it in loft when birds dive on food youer half way there

well old  birds  racing over  now  so wont  be  much  prob,  as  long  as the y/bs trap  fine  gives  ah  a season  to  find  ther  fault :X Speck

  only my opinion...but is your house very near to your loft? if it is i cant see you being able to stop them landing on the house rooof. another thing is are your birds scared to land??? maybe cats under the loft??? or hanging about the garden...like i say ,only my thoughts on subject others might disagree...

As Flapper says, if the loft is close to the house the birds will start to land on the highest point, norm being the house. By controlling the food you should be able to call them a soon as they touch the roof and they'll come down to the loft, after a few days they will start to come straight onto the loft. I f any then ever land on the roof you must call them off it straight away or they just start going back there again.

Are they pecking at the mortar in between the ridge tiles or pecking around the chimney pots? Is so they’re after something your not giving them.

Control, as with any animal, is done through the stomach.  I only hope there landing on your roof and not the neighbours because that's where a problem could start.  Once they've settled in you will be able to get them   ( through their stomach ) to drop straight onto/into the loft.

Beware of scaring them off your own roof, when/if they do get spooked they will land of a roof even further away.

the best flyer in my club lives on a houseing eastate he feeds as much as they whant and they fly 20min morning and  20 at night when they land on the roof he calls them in  and there in like a flash all them birds whant to do is get in that hut iv seen him 5 and 10 min infront of 15 members then hes got over fly to come of hes told me any pigeon that flys an hour morning and night must be mad all he says is i whant mine to fly on a saturday not threw the week exampel he top the fed out of 150 ml + had the fastest bird in the W.D.A on the day and he flys 15 ml further than any body els and that 15 ml dead ground

meant to say  i wouldent worry to much about them on the roof if you can get them to fly 20 min morning and night and get them moavated for  a saturday  they will come in for you

Don't worry about it... they sprout for the sake of spouting. Only thing that may have some bearing, but I think is cods wallop tooo ... is what they might peck up in he gutters.

So flush them out with a water hose pipe.

Have to start a topic of 'Stupid Myths' or No creedance Myths'. EVERYONES birds go on roofs.. just nip around and see those that have told theirs don't when their birds are out.

Yes a strict rutine of tight feeding on a very regular basis (Same Sex) may mean that they trap and seldom hit the roofs.... rarely, but sure as eggs are eggs that mixed sexes won't land on the roofs. It's self ego tripping ...,mmainly by those that are lastr most weeks.

It is a problem when the OBs are roofing and the YBs are not, usually other way about.  

 

I do not like my birds sitting on roofs, simply because there are two feral colonies not 500 yards from me, and I reckon one roof looks much like another to them, just like the general public - one pigeon sitting on a roof looks like any other.. feral. Thats how we all get tarred with same brush.

 

A tennis ball is far too hard. You know it can cause damage, to the bird too.   You want a soft ball, slightly bigger than a tennis ball, and brightly coloured. Patience, keep at it.

        Anyone is welcome to watch mine trap, be it from a race or excercising around home.  When I say they DON'T land on the house roof, then that's what I mean, no matter what others might think.
