Pigeons in school

Recommended Posts

Having spent all my life in Pigeons I am passionate about getting involved in promoting the sport to children. I need a few ideas about what I should take with me when I visit schools to talk to the children to make it more interesting for them.. The obvious things would be a few birds in a basket, and some pictures on my laptop. Any Suggestions please would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks

Cheers mate ;) was thinking about an old 'old' clock to show how things have progressed down the years, but I haven't got one now, gave my old Skymaster away years ago, wish I had kept it now :-/.

I did this type of thing many years ago & it was great to see the interest the kids showed.

Trouble nowdays might be red tape ......Saftey checks, child protection....ect

I help run an under 13's football team in Scotland & have an enhanced disclosure scotland check done, these are none transferrable so if I wanted to coach or teach at a school in my area I would need another enhanced disclosure for the school.

But it's  a great idea & I wish you well with it.

Can you imagine the laundry bill I may end up with if a child gets Christened ;D ;D ;D but worth taking that chance

That has always been a concern that I would need to look into. Was wondering if you need to get vetted by the Police etc, and get a warrant, like I needed to years ago when I was a Scoutmaster, Sad world that we live in

Sure is a sad world full of preditors ......checks are a pain in the *expletive removed* but they also get rid of ay doubt about individuals & protect teachers/coaches as well as kids.

Well if they need to be done, then bring it on, I got nothing to fear. . . . . Only little 'Johnny' asking the one question that no one for certain knows the answer too. "How do pigeons find their way home" ............. Another topic maybe :P

i know its a little expensive but im sure a few books of tickets or something would help but what if a bird was entered in a one loft loft take pic of bird before it goes go it in be stuck up in  school  also the teachers can get involved as the teacher can show the kids how to work out vecolites and other things like that and all schools have laptops so they can go on and check how there bird is going

now i know a lot here dont agree with one loft races but think about it its not about the rights or wrongs of it its a way of keeping kids interested for a good while if the bird lasts a few races i bet the kids couldn't wait to get into school to see how there bird got on the weekend and the great thing about it it will be there bird with maybe the school name

i think it would be be a great idea along with showing the kids the birds and answering there questions

just think about it and please don't bring in the rights or wrongs of one loft races as its about getting the kids interested with kids attention spans these days i think u need something to keep there attention for more than an hour one afternoon as a week later they forget all about the visit

just my thoughts

Great idea mate. My only thoughts at this time are getting Kids into our sport for it's long term future. NO rights or wrongs as far as I am concerned. Will give it some serious thought. I hope I can rely on the good people on here to follow my example and help to promote our sport in a positive way. It's not about NOW it's about the future.

I think it might work if you went to primary schools.

If you went to a high school i think it might be a bit different.  I personaly think you would get laughed at my high school - most people think pigeons are stupid and all the other things.

The RPRA will provide you with a pack containing all sorts eg pens, balloons, posters, booklets.I had 2 off them last term as i work part time as a school care taker.Dont worry about what to talk about as mine started about the role that pigeons played in World War 2 and ended up about Racing Breediing and all sorts.I took a couple of Squeakers and a couple of old birds with me and a talk that was supposed to last half an hour went on for over 2 hours. The kids will bombard you with questions as will the teachers just enjoy yourself.

Not knocking you Lloyd, but as a fancier, be more positive and prove that pigeons are not 'stupid'. Show your school mates what is involved and maybe they might change their views. Would they think the Queen is stupid? or in fact all the other well known people who keep them. Think they would be surprised just who does keep them. Get out there young man and take the smile off the faces of those who laugh at you. Educate them.

Was done at Walgrave school! till it had a new headmaster. ...  Like I say the parents used to attend Saturday morning etc. to watch them arrive.

Now Jak Jak on here is envolved with such a school ... be like Harroden I'd think. But their club members run it. Am sure he will fill you in with the details.

after doing this many years ago, i found it very easy to keep their attention for an hour or so [as they thought this was getting away from  lessons :)] first of all was showing them a lovely 4 week old pure white baby, letting each one touch or stroke it, some did, but some didnt, but the ones that didnt , soon picked up courage , and allthough somewhat hesitant, did stroke it.  after this , i showed them two eggs , told them that this white baby was just an egg 4 weeks ago, and that daddy and mummy pigeon , mated like all birds do , to have babies, after daddy and mummy were mated together , they became like  man and wife and layed these eggs [only two , about 10 days after they were married in the birdie world , then after 18 days , the eggs hatched , that was 4 weeks ago , then these babies grow so fast, that the one i have here , was an egg 4 weeks ago,, then told them , they now learn to fly , just the same as a baby learns to walk, but when they learn to fly they become homing pigeons , and fly back to their own house , we call it their pigeon loft, when they are older . they can fly hundreds of miles just to come back to you, if you were the owner and had a pigeon loft, i then had a basket of birds with some rubber rings , got all the kids to sign their name on a peice of paper, that was put on the birds legs , then took the kids outside to see the birds being released, i told them their loft was a few miles away and they will go home , then dualy showed them their notes the next day 5 mins b4 the bell, they were all amazed at this , having their bits of paper back, during all this time i exlained to them the first pigeon fancier, noah, then told the biblical story on noah, and the great flood  and that , that was thousands of years ago , then went on to the wars and about the pigeons that saved many lives ,as breif and interesting as poss, the story of winkie the scottish ,war pigeon, that many of us might not be hear to-day if it werent for these brave birds , then went on to how we can race these now ,by taking them hundreds of miles away with every other pigeon fanciers pigeons , then the pigeon that was looked after the best and trained the best would win and the owner would receive a trophie , with his name printed on it [showing them a trophy] this is all very breif,  as  questions were asked by them all [sometimes difficult to answer], these kids were primary school kids , eleven year old , they were absolutely fascinated , the teacher in fact took a list of the war pigeons , that were to be told to them at a later time , there was absolutely no boredom whatsoever,, [i was just glad the teacher was there to keep order :)] but can assure you, a fantastic time was had by all,,,,even the teachers  :) one thing i can say,, allthough i planned all this out, on paper etc i found i had to be a good ad-liber :) as the questions were mind boggling at times :)

Thanks for that Jimmy. I am so passionate about pigeons and promoting our sport, reading your post does bring a lump to the throat, but I have always been an emotional person, especially that we should all be thankful for what our feathered friends did in the 2 great wars for each and every one of us either directly or indirectly
