Guest strapper Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 a club m8 of mine had a bird that has taken 6 x 1sts + other cards, in recent years carried off this last week by mr peregrine.
hotrod Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 dont think im being funny mate , as i have a theory , well my dog a german shepherd is out the back with the birds when they are out every time , and i have never had a hawk strike at the loft , but my pal down the road about 400yrds gets hit all the time WHY? he has not got a dog ,a friend across the water in alexandria club had a jack russell dog in his compound for years no hawk strikes in all that time, it had to get put down and within 2/3 weeks he had a bird killed by a sparrowhawk, i think the hawk comes past to survey they area and see's the dog and thinks hey if i hit one of those doo's and land in that garden that dog might get me and does'nt bother and goes to an easier prey, just my theory.
just ask me Posted March 13, 2009 Report Posted March 13, 2009 if it a sparrow hawk in most cases it will go quiet for a few weeks cause she sits on the nest and goes through a full body moult and the cock sparrow hawk fills mostly fiches black birds birds of this size but I'm afraid when hen comes off the nest again its worse as she has to feed her self and her young its nearly worse when a hen sparrow hawk targets a particular area rember the birds of prey in most cases have there young later than all the rest of the wild birds so there plenty in the sky when they are training there youngsters to kill just some info

Right now she is in a feeding frenzie preparing to go to nest Once she has her eggs you will have no more problems about 1/10 April The hen sits all the time and the cock cannot carry a pigeon. He has to carry his kill to her Cheers Homer 49

Our dogs always in the garden when the birds are out but the hawk seems to ignore it as it ignores me. It grabbed at a yb at the beginning of the week within 5 ft of me. I was washing some nest grills and managed to give the bloody thing scooosh on its way past. Dog was right beside us as the birds are used to it and it doesnt bother with them, really likes the doos in fact. The first roller I bred years ago was abandoned in the nest just over a week old. we took it in the house and we were all feeding it. The wife came home for lunch and to feed the wee thing. Got a fright to see the hall door was open and the dog had got into the sitting room where the wee roller was. it wasnt properly featherd at the time and the dog must have licked and licked it as it was soaking wet. never harmed the wee thing though.
