Guest SPORTKA Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Got in from work tonight to find that my first egg had hatched unfortunatly the chick is dead and the other egg has been abandonded with both birds just sat outside the bowl, do they normally leave the egg if chick dies, I wasnt sure weather to remove chick but the egg felt cold anyway advice please.
Roland Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 May well be Pharhoid mucker ... however you spell it. Hope not, hope that it got a chill etc.
Guest kev d Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 the pair might not have been sitting tight enough best it died now in stead of wasting good corn on them later on , if there not strong enough to hatch no good mother nature working , wait till it warms up a bit cheers kev
Guest SPORTKA Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Hi Tony yes mate its their first nest, both 08 birds.
Tony C Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 My hunch is that the egg hatched today whilst the cock was sitting, when it was the hens turn to sit the nest she was wary/uncertain of the newly hatched chick so much so she didn’t cover the nest.
Guest SPORTKA Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Thanks Tony, just hope it dont happen two often, got 10 more due to hatch in next few days and their all under 08 birds
Tony C Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Its very unusual for this to happen so if it happens again to another pair you'll have to look for another reason. Hope its just a one off.
Guest SPORTKA Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 some due to hatch tommorow, so fingers crossed I have better luck with them, will keep you posted.
mark webster Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Sorry to hear about your dead chick and cold eggs. If it was me I would check for mice as birds continuely disturbed at this time of year during the night will leave their eggs and young. Just a thought, I have seen it for myself about three years ago. regards Mark www.mwebsterracingpigeons.com

peterpau Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 Mark Webster's looks like good advice kind of think birds only leave the nest if some thing drives 'em off. Rats or Mice, but my favourite would be the little biters you cant see, Red mite etc. Insecticide and maybe tobacco in the nest might be a good place to start. If you aint using tobacco stalks try about a fags worth of baccy per nest.
Guest IB Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 I think it may be the yearling cock, some are prone to coming off the nest and out the box at the slightest excuse: one or two having a barney on the floor can attract others down. The weather too hasn't been that great, a few minutes uncovered in this cold, and fresh hatch are gonners. Always remove dead youngsters, dead-in-shell from the nest. You can put a pot egg in, to keep them sitting, and maybe slip another older youngster under the pair, when you know they're sitting OK.
Roland Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 Rats would finish off. Mice wouldn't take off the nest in my oppinion.... Yes youngster could well have got cold.... But if NOT! Then what? Wing and a prayer time? dozens of other 'Useful' maybe's? I'd get a good view from an acceptable sauce. Yes in future some more, and it becoomes rife! Happen oh too often. No mice droppings? then what. Phar... get i checked and sorted. JBLofts will send you the rememdy for instance.
Guest SPORTKA Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 Had a good check round this morning, theres no signs of mice rats, the loft is only a couple months old, sraped out everyday, boxes etc all brand new too so dont think its any disease, I took the comple nest bowl out today and empied it, put it back in box, do I need to put plastic eggs in now?, nothink else hatched out yet, but in fairness its been down to -12 some days last week, dont think I will pair up this early next year, I feel realy treeeeeeeeeesed today !.
Tony C Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 You could try putting a couple of warm dummy eggs in the nestbowl and lock the hen in the nestbox but I'll doubt if she'll sit them. If she doesn't sit them tonight remove the dummy eggs and let them go down again under their own steam.
Guest Vic Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 Could have been intrusion by another stupid yearling. Was any nesting material displaced? Or was it using lights, wrongly? Causes are unlimited in beginners surroundings. Just be more observant.

Guest joe muzz Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 i think vic may be right on this
Guest SPORTKA Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 No the nest material was all in place and the unhatched egg was perfect, just have to hope its a one off, I am going to check when I get back from work tonight to see if any of the others have hatched, will update later tonight.
Roland Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 Can't understand this line of reasoning, Quote ' .... had a good check round this morning, theres no signs of mice rats, the loft is only a couple months old, sraped out everyday, boxes etc all brand new too so dont think its any disease ...!!"! end of quote. Now I would be more than anxious myself, because if not deserted, orput off the nest then disease would be foremost in my mine. As Sherlock said, when eliminating the ..... ..... etc, the what is left, has to be the truth! Besides owing to the newness, and the constant care given, I'd would certainly take the chick if you still have it to an 'Bird Veterian' and have an autopsy done. Send it via registered post to Libby Harrison for instance at Rhetford. £57 + VAT for peace of mind, and then KNOWING, and further how to deal with what is a small price to pay. I started a thread and was hoo booed as crap when I started on about the Samanella's Phars, etc. saying many lofts have the problem and yet don't even know.... and then lol and behold posters came out from the woodwork and stated the very things I'd just warned about, big time. Dig the chick out and if you can afford.... send it off for an autopsy. Hope I'm wrong, but at least you'll sleep better.
Roland Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 libby@retford-poultry.freeserve.co.uk She is approachable, further an poultry vet etc. specialist.
peterpau Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 I'd still go for mites etc and use bacca in the nest.

REDROCKET Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 no disrespect ment intrusion by other bird !maybe ,what for a warmer nest box its been between -6 and-12 for last week to early for breeding in my opinion i'd put this down to cold. ps hope you find the cause soon good luck.
