thomasd Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 How do u use Epsom Salts and what does it do and is it ok to use. thanks
peterpau Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 Yes it is ok to use and will remove a small amount of internal parasites but it aint for me I use Milton cider vinegar and honey.
Guest TIMBARRA LOFTS Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 epsom salts is used to purge pigeons , add 2 teaspoons to 5 pints of water with tea added, but i would advise against its use as not feeding the birds for 1 day and giving plain water does the same thing without damaging the intestinal lining of the stomach. well said peter pau regards spencer
Guest Owen Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 I think it is cruel and of no practical use at all. It is one of those old fashioned ideas that should be chucked into the bin. It is a bit like putting a rusty nail in the water to give them iron. Give the birds the widest selection of grit and minerals possible, good clean food and water, have the droppings tested so that they are clear of internal parasites. Check for external parasites and they should automatically come into good health and then into form.

thomasd Posted March 23, 2009 Author Report Posted March 23, 2009 I wanted to know another what sould i do to get my pigeon in top health ready for racing worms canker cocci etc getting them ready.
Guest TIMBARRA LOFTS Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 I wanted to know another what sould i do to get my pigeon in top health ready for racing worms canker cocci etc getting them ready. your pigeons should already be in top health, if not looking into a bottle of whatever mate wont do it, it is just a waste of your time and money.. how long have you had pigeons you sound like a new starter, i dont know you so its hard to advise when i not know your situation.
thomasd Posted March 23, 2009 Author Report Posted March 23, 2009 Started racing yb's last year first timer just wanting to do well and not getting to many losses
Novice Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 At one point in time fanciers always purged their birds using Epsom salts. The practice is outdated but one thing they never realised was that Epsom salts provided Magnesium which is essential for muscle formation. There may be some logic in adding this to the water in minute quantities on a daywhen you would normally add electrolytes.

Like I said. Milton will help with cocci cider vinegar E-coli and kanker add to that a wormer like moxidectin or Ivermectin. Job done. To be fair I will treat with Ronidazole or Spartrix for kanker, Coxoid or Appertex for cocci. Just to start 'em off.
Guest TIMBARRA LOFTS Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 Started racing yb's last year first timer just wanting to do well and not getting to many losses its simple really, where do you live mate?

There may be some logic in adding this to the water in minute quantities on a daywhen you would normally add electrolytes. Epsom salts only make up a part of electrolytes, the mix also entails other componenets and these work in harmony to balance the birds system, i dont think by giving just one it would benefit greatly but cause an imbalance. but a local chemist will know better.
greenlands Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 Have used epsom salts and bicarbonate of soda for years ,level teaspoon of each in two litres of water but first pour very hot water on the carb soda which will then thrith up.Usually use it on Thursdays if the birds aren't performing too well. This will not purge them.Like anything else that you buy there's always something cheaper if you care to try it.My opinion.Lindsay
jimmy white Posted March 28, 2009 Report Posted March 28, 2009 How do u use Epsom Salts and what does it do and is it ok to use. thanks this was used many times in the past,,,,to purge birds,, but why purge healthy birds?? better than epsom salts,,, is winning a race ;D ;D ;D then doing ,,,, SUMMERSALTS ;D ;D ;D good luck thomas
jimmy white Posted March 28, 2009 Report Posted March 28, 2009 I wanted to know another what sould i do to get my pigeon in top health ready for racing worms canker cocci etc getting them ready. my advice would be,, have their droppings tested,[its cheaper than buying medications, that you may well not be needing to give them] , keep few , but select pigeons, a clean dry, well ventilated loft, and very good loft husbandry [loft management] again, the best of luck thomas
walterbmasson Posted March 29, 2009 Report Posted March 29, 2009 JIMMY I GIVE MY BIRDS GLAUBER SAULTS BEFORE RACING AFTER PICKING ABOUT AS THEY HAVE OPEN HOLE TILL LOFT IS DRY AND IF I SEE THE FLESH IS ON THE BLUEISH COLOUR ONE PURGE AND YOU WILL SEE THE FLESH TURNING PINK BUT AGAIN ITS UP TO EACH INDIVIDUAL FANCIER FOR ME IT HELPS THE BIRDS AFTER BREEDING BEFORE RACING :)
