FoxesFan4Ever Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 Hi there, With the weather being so hot yesterday I figured it might be a good day to get the birds to have a bit of a clean up seeing as I have been told they like a bath. I was using an old dog bed, one of the big vinyl ones with a lower front than back because I thought that would hold enough water but they wouldn't entertain it at all. I caught a couple of birds and showed them the water hoping the others would get the message but no joy. Is there a technique to getting them in the water or do I just have to wait for them to pick it up on their own? Thanks for all your help. Foxes Never Quit.
just ask me Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 im not really sure of what u are useing but if its right height leave it out they will hop in what i use goes up to about the level of there wing when they stand
Guest bigda Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 a cat litter tray, they are good for bird baths inside the shed on good dry days only ;D
cowman Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 or go to your local cheap shop they do those plastic storage boxes i fill mine um to wing level and the birds wont stay out of it .
REDROCKET Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 fill it up to the wings what u racing ducks lol as bigda says cat litter tray inside the loft ,or outside on the landing board a wee bit of garlic in the water does'nt hurt either and dont forget to leave a towel out for them.lol
Guest peter.j Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 i use the bases off old bird cages but there basicaly the same size as litter trays
Guest numpty01 Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 when birds are out turn on lawn sprinkler they love it but stock birds get two litter trays they do the job ;D ;D
FoxesFan4Ever Posted April 6, 2009 Author Report Posted April 6, 2009 OK this is the dog bed I am using. Obviously the water can only come up as high as the front. However I can go for some litter trays and try those instead if thiisnt suitable. This is the first time I have tried to post a pic on here so forgive me if I screw it up please.
Guest numpty01 Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 there is nothing wrong with dog bath as bird bath but when you fill it make sure the birds see you filling it and the water splashe.s around this may be odd thing to say but healthy birds bath others wont ??
Peckedhen Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 Put the bath out when its raining they'll go down into it then.
retired Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 If you have a bakers near you (Curtis especially) ask them for one of the cake trays they make fantastic baths, they may try and charge a couple of £ but its better than paying over the odds. Maybe even one of the trays from the van sales department where you work - I used to have loads of them here but gave away over time.

Hey mate, I haven't had a problem with my birds, Ii just fill up a washing up bowl, I also spray them with the hose pipe, they love it, they lie on their sides with their wings up, failing that Id jjust leave them.
chris h Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 this is what i use they cost anything from £30 but good for the job without the harris of course
jimmy white Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 Put the bath out when its raining they'll go down into it then. this is your best bet,, they will get used to it easier then
THE FIFER Posted April 6, 2009 Report Posted April 6, 2009 yes they like bathing when its dull or raining, once they get used to it they will bath anytime,
celtic Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 I use an old white fish box from the fishmongers, ideal size and easy to keep clean.
pjc Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 if the birds are not used to getting a bath then just leave the bath in the loft section for a day, put it in 1st thing and leave it there. I'd be suprised if you came home to find they hadn't bathed and once they know what it is and what your bath looks like then move it outside the loft and they will recognise it!
chris h Posted April 7, 2009 Report Posted April 7, 2009 some of my youngsters having there first bath today
