60 pigeons killed in arson attack

Almost 60 birds have been killed in a fire after arsonists targeted a pigeon fanciers' club on the outskirts of Belfast.

 

The blaze in two sheds beside a house in the Twinbrook estate was reported just after 0330 BST on Friday.

 

A family who live next door managed to escape unharmed.

 

The police have said they are treating the incident as arson and are trying to establish a motive for the attack.

 

The birds' owner, Kevin Doherty, said it was lucky no-one was injured.

 

"My neighbours came across banging the doors to get us up because the sheds were blazing," he said.

 

"You couldn't even open the doors because of the flames, the heat was unbelievable.

 

"By the time the fire brigade got here everything was gutted, all gutted."

 

Peter Martin, the chairman of Fortfield Pigeon Club, said the attack had put Mr Doherty's work back five years.

 

"I would say in total £10,000 minimum to put him back to were he was," he said.

 

"But it's not the monetary end, it's the time, the effort and the next five years he's going to have to spend redoing everything that he's done so far."

Saw it on the BBC regional news last night. Absolute tragedy for the fancier and those poor birds. Hanging would be too good for the b---rds that done this. Hope they're caught before they inflict this pain on some other unsuspecting fancier.

Every time i read these threads it sickens me and brings it all back. Why is our world so f****d up and these cowards get away with this crap. My thoughts are with the effected.

Unfortunatly very few ever get caught but hopefully somebody on here knows them and pass on our wishes and maybe offers of help although I understand the basic's fund set up for these cases is an empty pot.

definately im with you but my bet is its a jealous pigeon fancier probably we have some sick people in this sport hope its not but thats what i think

Sounds good idea and someone reliable to run it and keep people who have supported it  updated on how much was raised where its gone and whats left no good having a fund with no funds and no one knowing :-/ if money is getting low some kind of auction or fund raising needs to be started to keep it going perhaps an annual auction or something
