REDCHEQHEN Posted August 22, 2009 Report Posted August 22, 2009 Has returned from race today covered in oil - have got the oil off his beak and feet with baby wipes - bu it won't touch what he's got on feathers wings feathers- under carriage - and on his back - think he had a bath in it if I wash him in washing up liquid - is that him done for the rest of the season?? any other suggestions welcome
pjc Posted August 22, 2009 Report Posted August 22, 2009 no, warm water with detergent then thouroughly rinse with clean water an it'll be fine. you may need to do it a couple of times.
OLDYELLOW Posted August 22, 2009 Report Posted August 22, 2009 oil can aborb in to the skin , if you have oil use washing up liquid and salt to get it off , i would recomend you get some charcoal tablets and a clay pickstone to help detoxify the birds system , i wouldnt recommend racing for rest of season as bird may be suffering for absorbing the oil into it's skin
REDCHEQHEN Posted August 22, 2009 Author Report Posted August 22, 2009 cheers here goes (evil)(dizzy) I do have some charcoal capsules - so I'll empty one down him
pjc Posted August 22, 2009 Report Posted August 22, 2009 If its only just got itself covered hopefully it won't have preened and injested any, but the quicker its washed off the better.
OLDYELLOW Posted August 22, 2009 Report Posted August 22, 2009 rub the washing liquid in to the feathers neat and pour salt on dry and rub in the oil will attach itself to the salt tghe thoroughly rinse it off ensuring no oil on the birds skin
chichichi Posted August 22, 2009 Report Posted August 22, 2009 you see all the rescue people using fairy liquid,, give them a good wash and rinse them well.. they should be ok.. best of luck ant

pjc Posted August 22, 2009 Report Posted August 22, 2009 Well the poor thing didn't take too kindly to it think he went into shock so he's currently wrapped in a towel in a warm place (evil) Sounds like my kids when they get a bath!
REDCHEQHEN Posted August 22, 2009 Author Report Posted August 22, 2009 I was worried as he wouldn't eat, but he's looking a lot better after eating and most of the oil has gone - still a bit on his flights - but managed to get it all off his body - so he's looking a lot better (just have to get the oil off the landing board and corridor now )
