I am looking at taking care of pigeons but wondered if its cruel to keep them enclosed in a aviary. If I leave the aviary open will they fly away-or will they come back when they want.

Hope you can help. Thanks.

Hello Lee, the short answer is no, it isn't cruel at all and you'll find that a happy pigeon would never fly far away instead choosing to come home to the comfort of its home.  Just like anyone Lee, if you don't like the place you live in your hardly likely to return time after time.   :)

lee the birds will all fly away if you intend to keep pigeons only get youngbirds that are ready to leave their perants then as they grow they will learn you are food safty and home then they will stay donot get older birds they will be gone as soon as you open door

Influencer, Can you answer this .

Is Horse racing cruel ?

Is Dog racing   cruel ?

Our pigeon are Athlets, we bred them, give them the best food, the best heath care, as any trainer would an athlete. For that's what our pigeons are "ATHLETES OF THE SKY".

I hope this anwers your ridicules question ;) IS KEEPING PIGEON CRUEL

if you get them when they cant fly then let um mature and leave them walk in and out they will be okay when they start flying they will know its home by then

Totally cruel, when I started with them back in the 50's I had hair ,good looking and everything a man could want, you should see me know.As for the pigeons they get the best of feed, sex and all the comforts of home that a man could want, bring up a couple of kids and when they grow up they've gone and they start all over again .Cruel who to ? the pigeons or the keeper.Looking forward to young bird racing then the rest of my hair can fall out.Lindsay C

Thank you. If I race them is it safe- do many get hurt or lost. Or killed.

Hi Lee sadly they do get lost and hurt and even killed, It is all part and parcel of our wonderful sport. You have to take the ruff with the smooth. But its not all doom and gloom mate. When they come home from a race you get a buzz.

you are doing the right thing though Lee. Asking questions and looking into things first, looks like you have a good head on your shoulders

people race cars  crash get killed. race horses fall off get killed.

IS THAT CRUEL.

NA there is always hazzards in everything.  you could walk outside trip and hit your head

and die, is that cruel.

There are hazzards everywhere in all life  so just you stay in your we house and dont ever go out just incase you have a wee accident.

Then why do you do it if they get lost hurt or killed- That sounds cruel.

Nice leading questions Lee.,  how many horses die in the Grand National?  Plenty, ask the owner of the multi million pound horse why he does it?  You'll then know the answer here.   ;)

why not just keep pigeons and take care of them. from what people have said on here they are only racing them for their selves-thats selfish. If you didnt force them to race they would not get hurt or lost or killed.

well mine would still get hurt with the sparrowhawks bttering on there aviary and the birds crashing round in a state of panic breaking there legs etc.  Getting hurt when the peregrine drives them through the power cables when its having its we bit of fun chasing them for half an hour.  End of subject.  Disapere mate.

not quite true one last week killed by a sparrowhawk two  days later peregrine takes another where? in my own back garden

also lost birds that were traumatised by these strikes

all we want is to enjoy our hobby in peace but even mild mannered people have had enough of these kills

yes but dull one- these are living beings and you are getting your kicks by risking their lives.

that sounds very sick. you have little regard for other creatures life by the sound of it.

thats true we get kicks out of it the same kicks my grandfather and his grandfather did

just like millions of anglers who get there kicks from catching fish

what you don't understand is we hate losing our birds  but over the last 25 years it has become an epidemic why?

maybe the same reason the common house sparrow is now on the endangered list or the cuckoo or warlbler, starling etc.....
