Guest kev d Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 dull question but are there any preferred types of sand and lime that are used kline dried sand dont buy jointing sand as its treated to stop weeds and just garden lime .
chickadee Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 hi peter thanks for reply, how often do these shavings stay down before changing for fresh Make sure the shavings are not too fine as the get blown all over the place, I use easybed and hemp core in the new lofts. Scrape off the worst and use stalosan F once a week on floor, nest boxes and perches. Scrape the aviaries and old loft every day alternatively

Guest Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 brought this thread up for ... VAN ROBERTS . andy.
pjc Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 kiln dried sand also doesn't stain the birds if they were to lay on it when wet after a bath etc.
Guest Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 cheers andy many thanks happy reading ,good luck with what you choose . andy.
Guest Freebird Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 I use kiln dried sand as recomended by Dovey. I sieve it every day and eventually it runs out as it sticks to droppings but it lasts for months. I use it around an inch deep. Only drawback I've found is in damp weather it sticks to their feet. It certainly looks good and the birds think they are on the costa brava, he he! You do get a build up of dust but you will with anything you use. On windy days I have the loft door wide open and I sieve it high so all dust gets blown out.
Guest Freebird Posted September 20, 2009 Report Posted September 20, 2009 in a 8x6 2 bags of sand and 1/4 bag of lime and rake in well What's the lime for tiger?
K J Young Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 I use building ( rough ) sand in all our section . It gets riddled once a year. I have never put lime in it . as long as the huts dry it will do the rest. we.ve had the same deep litter in our stock hut for the best part of 10 years. Anything from 2 / 4 inches deep. I tried esibed in one section this year but didnt like it.
Guest kev d Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 because the birds are moulting im not cleaning them out at the mo im just not disturbing them its 3 weeks now since i cleaned them out and its doing my head in not having a clean loft but i must say the birds are looking a picture and the dropping are very good and the loft is bone dry now the dropping are turning to dry droppings but im itching to clean out im seeing how long i can last before i clean out .
wilkins Posted September 26, 2009 Report Posted September 26, 2009 i think with deep litter how it works depends how many you keep in the section i have one section 6 foot with 17 birds and hemicore is great in the other where my ybs were i had 32 birds in a 7 foot section and it got dusty
