hi peter thanks for reply, how often do these shavings stay down before changing for fresh

Make sure the shavings are not too fine as the get blown all over the place, I use easybed and hemp core in the new lofts. Scrape off the worst and use stalosan F once a week on floor, nest boxes and perches. Scrape the aviaries and old loft every day alternatively :)

I use kiln dried sand as recomended by Dovey. I sieve it every day and eventually it runs out as it sticks to droppings but it lasts for months. I use it around an inch deep. Only drawback I've found is in damp weather it sticks to their feet. It certainly looks good and the birds think they are on the costa brava, he he! You do get a build up of dust but you will with anything you use. On windy days I have the loft door wide open and I sieve it high so all dust gets blown out.

I use building ( rough ) sand in all our section . It gets riddled once a year. I have never put lime in it  . as long as the huts dry it will do the rest. we.ve had the same deep litter in our stock hut for the best part of 10 years. Anything from 2 / 4 inches deep. I tried esibed in one section this year but didnt like it.
