Hogni Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 Treat only sick birds, and on vets advice. Don´t treat all the birds if 1 or 2 are sick or even worse if none are sick.
Guest stevie-b Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 if the de-weerd stand is at blackpool ask to speak to henk-deweerd he will put u on the right track

andrecrock Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 Hi mate,if i were to start up right now i with stock birds i would go for above said, canker first with vits after and then worms with coxi to follow if they got prop in that area.
blackdog Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 your birds should be ok till you start to mix with others in the racing season then i would treat them for canker, resp and bacterial infections on a 3 weekly cycle, this is a must, jmo
jimmy white Posted December 18, 2009 Report Posted December 18, 2009 in my opinion its often better [and cheaper] to have their droppings tested,,,, and a swab taken,,,then if treating,s a must, so be it,, but as they say,,,if it aint broken you cant fix it ,, many treatments such as cocci, canker, worms etc are cures,,, not preventatives,, good loft management should keep these levels to a minimum, i,e overcrowded loft, un-ventilated lofts,, and dirty, damp lofts ., avoid these at all costs,,,good luck
robbiedoo. Posted December 18, 2009 Report Posted December 18, 2009 treat for nowt imo you should ask a experienced local fanceir to come round and have a look at your birds if he thinks there alright treat for nothing and if hes suspects something get your droppings tested .
Guest shippy Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 Dont get caught up in any of it... natural health..!!! waltzer take heed to that sound advice in a season or 2 you will have a team that have built up a good natural immune system best of luck for the future

Guest IB Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 Welcome to the forum and as you can see lots of different opinions & views just reflecting 'the norm' in the big pigeon world out there. My advice is to have a wee read up on the organisms that cause the diseases mentioned. I think that will help you look after your pigeons. Just compare the writers' different views on those organisms and their advice on how to deal with them, but be especially 'wary' of those that are also trying to sell you something, for example a pharmaceutical company website, because they have a vested interest in scaring you into buying products that you may not need.
Guest Owen Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 Regular testing of the droppings and swabs is always the best way to go. An example of what can happen is as follows. One guy came to me and I found a lot of cocci in one set of droppings but the other two lots were fine. This happened on three separate occasions. The birds were all fed and treated in the same way. So the question was,"What is differant about the birds or the loft with the bad cocci count". As a result of regular testing we were able to work out that there was a problem with the loft itself. It turned out to be a damp floor and the loft was in a shady place compared with the others. The problem was fixed and the cocci count matched the other birds. As far as cocci, canker and hexamita is concerned it is better not to treat during the closed season. This is because it gives the birds a chance to build up their resistance to these things. However, this idea does not apply to worms or body lice. The birds must be kept free of these things at all times. One word of caution. Hair worm can be very hard to shift and you may have to dose the birds up to three times to clear them out. Another reason for testing properly. It is worth noting that it is my opinion that birds with either canker or cocci do not win races. I like to test mine on a Monday so that I know the position and then I have time to deal with the problem in good time. There is no such thing as birds without these diseases these days because they will pick them up in the baskets. I think that the worst thing to do is to blind dose the birds because these drugs have side effects and the less times you use them the better. And when they are treated it can take time for the drug to leave the system. My own solution to this is that I race 6 cocks one week and another 6 the following week. That way, all the birds can be kept in radiant health and are never harbouring the effect of some drug or other.
Guest casbri Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 i would treat for cocsi ..canker..worms
