Dimetrodon Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 Hi, this is my first post. I want to get back into racing birds again. My only experience was as a child, my father was involved for a number of years. Just a little bit at a loss as to how to get started. What should I look out for when buying my first birds etc. Any advice for an out and out beginer would be appreciated.
Roland Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 Find out a club that will accept you - or two or three, because you will be welcomed first of. They find out a couple of good consistant flyers in another Fed or two and buy some late breds of them later in year. In the mean time you will be unendated with freebies from here and your club members. So that done pronto ask 'What are the pit fals in building a loft... Like roof should slope downwards so you can always see if anything untoward is on it. etc. etc. An electric fence...
Guest Davy Fleming Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 Would try and find out where a good local fancier stays and speak to him for advice and sure he will help a lot instead of just going head first . As for freebies I would be a bit reluctant now (hindsight) to accept anything and everything just for the sake of getting started. Probably save yourself a lot of time. GOOD LUCK MATE
Guest bakes Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 have you got an loft mate if you have apply for your rpra membership wonce that arrives look for local clubs in your area attend there nights that the lads will be at the club the lads from the club will help you out breeding you ybs wonce you got the birds and your trained them and got them more or less ready to race apply for the application to join the club wonce you have been approved the fed sec and club sec will come around your house or were you have the loft to do your measurements longatude lattitude and they will ask you what you wont to race iver youngbirds or oldbirds or both so the fed sec can set you up an race planner and get you going bud there loads of lads lasses on her that will help you out in anyway they can with information or they might even breed you some ybs to try all the best.
Dimetrodon Posted February 16, 2010 Author Report Posted February 16, 2010 Thanks for the reply Roland. I can see thaat this forum is going to be very useful to me. It is obvious that I have a lot to learn.
Roland Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 Yep Davey speaks sense of course regards 'Freebies'. But I personally can't see a more cost effective way to make mistakes with whilst learning. Yes if one has a reliable sauce close at hand with time and willingness to help, great. Most disappear quickly... the quicker and the sooner the more you start to win lol ;D Many 'Has beens' ( that never was) spout great yarns of how good their' birds are etc. Gosh everyone barr me is a world beater and has great birds. Especially after a couple of sherberts lol. These are one mostly, YES their' birds you will be given in 'Hope' that they will do something, or throw something good for you ... as they never have for them lol ;D ;D ;D So a 'Bad' bird cost just as much to fed and train as a good birds. :-/ Now if one has the means, and time to start of correct and wants to achieve, then Davey's word may well be the best offered.
REDROCKET Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 since you know what to do now i'll take this opertunity to welcome you to the site the guy's and girls on here are quick to give help when required most of the time all the best.

Dimetrodon Posted February 16, 2010 Author Report Posted February 16, 2010 Thanks for all the advice guys. I don't have a loft ready yet but have a massive shed at the bottom of a hundred foot garden. I am thinking of converting that. Any memories I have as a child are probably way out of date. I know there is a local club, so I guess that would be the obvious port of call. I think ive been holding back because I felt I ought to have a little more knowledge first.
grizzal Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 welcome to p/bs m8,as you say you have a shed im not sure if you would need permission to have it as aloft for your birds?? would not be good to get birds and then be told you cannot keep them. sure someone will know the answer on here all the best when you start up
OLDYELLOW Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 Welcome To Pigeon Basics Dimetrodon , We hope you enjoy the site where about do you live ? then i can point to towards the correct union there you'l get to know which clubs are in your area for you . Are you private or rented accomadation ? if rented you would need permision from your land lord or association to keep pigeons , however as you have a shed already you could apply for a change of use , most lofts have to be 1 metre away from all boundarys , im sure if you can give more details then we can best give you as much information as you will need , i wish you all the best Regards Mark
pigeonpete Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 Welcome to the site mate :-) And dont worry about Knoweledge, This is my 5th year, and i made some big mistakes, And im still learning, But if you dont make mistakes you will never learn from them. So take it as it comes, and ask away on here :-)
pjc Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 Welcome to the site. As has been said above, check you can keep birds where you are firstly, find your local club where you may find a local fancier who will mentor you. Before you think about getting any birds get your loft sorted, design it, alter it but try and get it right first time rather than having to keep changeing it, makeing sure ventilation works etc.

Guest ROCKYandRAMBO Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 welcome to the site mate and i hope you do get into keeping and racing pigeons as prob all the feelings you had as a boy when your dad kept them will still be there , and dont be afraid to get any because you think you need more knowledege because most of what you find out is by keeping them and you learn some thing new each day in this sport and in your loft , convert the shed and get a few pairs and just have a play with them this year as in this sport there will be me downs than ups beleive me but when you see one fold home on a sat that is a real buzz , and if you have some common sense you wont be to far away at winning with pigeons mate all the best and if you need any help pm me , and remember to enjoy it
