The only real protection birds have when they are attacked by peregrine falcons, is to hit the deck. Anyone who has these nasty devils patroling the sky near them will have seen it plenty of times. I saw two falcons forcing three pigeons to go higher and higher  until one of them lost it's nerve and made a dive for the ground and safety. That, of course, was what the falcons wanted. They were after the pigeon in a flat out dive. The pigeon never stood a chance, they caught up with it at about roof height and went off with the pigeon wriggling and the falcons screaming.

I would bet a lot of money on the fact the starlings were doing the same. Diving to stop the falcon getting one and they just hit the ground. I know that pigeons can hit the ground with a lot of force, injuring themselves, when they are trying to avoid a falcon. And I know of one case where the pigeon smashed a double glazed window trying to get away from a falcon. The pigeon was killed and it's owner had to pay for the window.

I saw the exact same thing a few months back on the M65 motorway - dead starlings all over the carriageway, police were on the scene. it wasnt far from some pylons and wires that i figured it was just an electricity surge but you never know

its only in the last 5 years that i have noticed  flocks of starlings,  and it must be a saftey in numbers thing,   for when i was a lad  i  used to shoot them way  the slug gun ,  and they did not fly the way they  do now, through the day,     maybe going it to old works at night  but never flew like the way they do,   as they where always in yer garden and they will not stay in the garden for long nowdays   so the  hawks are  after them all right, :o :o

the rspb will have a reason for it and it wont be bops ,it's getting to the stage that's

all they have left to hunt is starlings well that's about all in my area anyway :(.
