Guest cosmic dave Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 I fly the birds in the morning and I don't feed them before they go out, I have cut their food down to 1 oz each per day. I remove the food mid afternoon. but the birds ( all YBs ) wont fly and wont come in when called and will sit on the house roof all day long. I am not letting them out tomorrow and feeding them early to see what happens, but it very frustrating :-/ :-/ :-/ David
Guest youngboy Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 how old are they? well i starve them if they dont come in, then youll see how fast theyll come in, and if they do it again keep doing it ( only to the ones that dont trap ) theyll soon cop on
DJWa Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 i found it best to let them out after your tea and feed them when they come in lift any feed left any that dont come in miss a feed and will be 1st in the next night after youve got them under control you can let them out earlier and call them in when you want again if any dont come in when called they miss a feed it works for me but can take a bit of time to get them into the habit especially if you've y/bs of different ages in the same section

DJWa Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 let them out at about 5 o clock ? yes about 5 or 6 as it starts to get dusk they are looking to get in to roost anyway which makes it easier for you in getting them in
JohnQuinn Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 Always give yb's a handful less than you think they need. Don't need to go weighing food every feed watch them when they feed and so long as they have all had access to the feeding, lift it when the 1st bird goes to the perch. You'll know in a day or 2 how much to put down. Secondly, don't allow young birds to lay about the roof it'll bite you on race day when they sit looking at you NOT timed in. Young birds should always be in one of three places; in the loft in the basket or in the sky, if you master that you'll win races i promise.
OLDYELLOW Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 yes about 5 or 6 as it starts to get dusk they are looking to get in to roost anyway which makes it easier for you in getting them in this is what i do as can easily call them in they dont venture too far and get used to been called in also hawks should be full by then resulting in less losses
marmite Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 let them out about 5ish m8 in the eve in morn just give them half a norm feed take whats left away after 10 mins then no more till after exercise in eve they will trap when called any that mess about miss the eve feed they will soon learn atb clive
blackdog Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 Young birds should always be in one of three places; in the loft in the basket or in the sky, 100% right

ovy1255 Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 AGREE with most of the guys -i have my birds in a housing estate -never let them out on a morning ,when they do go on the house roofs call them off if they dont come chase them off with a sponge ball or a fishing rod[pole]. when they are young they just flop back down.only feed on a night and dont leave any corn in. if you do feed in the morning only seed and then only 2 handfuls per 30 birds use this seed to tame your birds spend a little time in with them while they are eating the seed. when u have control let them out a little earlier and watch them fly the heavens.----------you are the boss and roof toppers dont win races .they just take the rest of the team onto the roof.cull them out or start to keep fancy pigeons.
dwh Posted April 12, 2010 Report Posted April 12, 2010 OUR YBS ONLY GO OUT ON A MORNING FED TWICE A DAY WE DON'T AVE THIS PROBLEM FEED THEM BARLEY VERY LIGHTLY ON A MORNING IF THEY DON'T COME IN WEN YOU CALL THEM IN THEY GET NOWT LIGHT MIX ON A NGHT LET THEM OUT SAME ROUTINE TEY SOON LEARN WORKED FER US

Everytime you feed the birds you click the clicker. They will eventually get to associate the click sound with food, what we do when we want them to come in is fill the food trays with food and call them in whilst using the clicker, they soon learn very quickly. It works very well and would recommend it to anyone when working with youngsters. jas.
