What would you guys do with a yearling widowhood cock who has lost his box to a more dominant cock that has taken over 2 boxes or what can I do to keep the dominant cock in his own box..........?

I once used a cap and gave the cock a taste of its own medicine

When it went in another box, it soon learned

this is one thing about pigeon s that annoy me , when the tranquility in the loft is changed by one idiot .

but usually in most cases the dominant is the better bird , and the other a wimp , if he wont even try to fight for his box , he,s not going to be in a big hurry to get back home if he,s not happy . try putting dominant cock away for a few days , untill the wimp as gained his confidense back

One of the problems with Widowhood Cocks is that some will dominate others, in the way you describe. When this happens you run the risk that the ones on the bottom end of the pecking order will loose confidence and become fearful. In addition to that, birds that are fighting a lot will expend energy when they should be resting. When they do that they will run their races during the week in the loft and not be able to fly energetically when they are actually racing.

I lock my birds up in their boxes to counteract this sort of thing. The benefits are that all the birds are motivated and full of confidence. And more importantly they rest when they are suposed to.

The idea behind frightening a Widowhood Cock by Teddy Bears or hiddings with a cap is plain daft. Why would you want to scare a bird that could be in top form and ready to win you a few bob? Surely you are better off creating peace in your loft and have ALL the birds feeling good and secure about their boxes.

I would keep the wimp in the loft on a perch and later see what situations you can conjure up to motivate either or both cocks.

brilliant idea , or id take the wimp out and keep him in a diff loft then reintroduce him on a fri night to motivate the stronger cock

I have an older cock that runs the loft, well he thought that, every time he went into another box, i locked him in his own box for a short spell, he soon got fed up with being locked up, now he has his own box only.  :)

id do similar lock dominant cock up in his box till other regans his confidence / box and let them out one am one pm so they never get a problem from each other , then can use it to motivate later  ;)

Thank you all for your comments - It doesn't really upset the tranquility of the loft because the "wimp" doesnt fight back - he just sits on the floor. For the same reason, I don't think I can use it as a motivation tool. I feed in thier boxes and he will go into other boxwes to eat but he won't fight for his box.

I think I will try Rocky and Rambos idea to use him to motivate the dominant one but will close the wimps box the wek before racing and then re-introduce the wimp on Friday night.

I will let you know how he goes.

Thanks again and good luck to everyone for the coming season.
