Guest frank dooman Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 all you need is 6 weeks on darkness so u av plenty of time i think its up to 10th may cut off date adam can you tell me how six weeks is enough it takes them 2 weeks just to start the moult then 4/6 weeks to get through the body moult and at least 2/3 to get them past the stress JMO
holmsidelofts Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 this is the perfect time take them off 21st june that gives you 10 weeks spot on Frank is spot on, Ive been doing the darkness for 20 years now and i like you will be parting youngsters over in a week and they will be fine. I have found no benefit anymore in rearing winter youngsters, especially the way the weather has been again this year you struggle to have them out, they mature earlier in the year which means you have to train them earlier and you have to feed them. I prefer youngsters leaving around this time as the weather starts to break and you can look after the properly. they will race just as good as winter youngsters do. jas.
Guest frank dooman Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 does any body else who races darkness just do it for 6 weeks ??

dal2 Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 i cant remember which one but one of the oneloft races does it like this i do 13hours for 6weeks adam. Do your darkness younguns fly out as normal during the six weeks?
dal2 Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 twice a week mate Mine go out everyday because im frightened they put on weight but some guys up here dont bother and chase them up only after the body moult!!
adam owen Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 i tryed that once and it done my head in they were out for days know i get them out everyday till flying so within a week this is done then they go out once twice at most for a flap but mainly a bath all i want them to do is moult and grow into old birds i dnt worry to much about the wait as u can change the feed a bit towards the end of the moult by adding barley buti dont over feed them tho as this can lead to problams
Guest frank dooman Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 it may be different for the shorter races but i cant under stand why you would use darkness for the early races ive done it for years now and just cant see how you can get them fully through the body moult in 6 weeks
adam owen Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 i dont use the dark for short races mainly for the nationals u can race them natrual for short races try it it with a few see for your self
holmsidelofts Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 it may be different for the shorter races but i cant under stand why you would use darkness for the early races ive done it for years now and just cant see how you can get them fully through the body moult in 6 weeks I would never waste darkness birds on the early races, darkness birds come into there own in the latter part of the year when flying in the nationals when every natural birds have fell apart. For me the birds are on the dark from march 20 ish to june the 21st, that way they hold there wing feather longer so that when it comes to the longer races they are in there prime.
Guest frank dooman Posted April 7, 2010 Report Posted April 7, 2010 sory adam i was just refering to your sprint specialist on yor aviator and every one to there own i just wondered if any one else was sucessfull with a six week dark system
