blaz Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 i was training my yb,s to day with my mates yb,s. as we pooled in to put yb,s birds up.we where talking about which yb,s we thought where or own choice of something a bit special. i picked out a gay pied hen as she is well bred and also a bit of a pet as she is so tame. so baskets set up then opened the birds where just out when my mate shouted their is a hawk.one off the yb,s was not in the batch .the hawk immediately singled it out.flying for its life straight in to some trees hawk right behind him.the hawk broke of the chase before it got in to the trees. i went over to the trees to see a very stressed yb sitting on a branch RIPPED OPEN .it was one of my mates a checker pied staff van reet cock. when i got home our 30 to 35 min toss .became a 1h 20 min one my mate lost 1 i am down 3 including my gay pied hen. to say i am annoyed at this is an under statement .

Blue Chequer Pied Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 we all get hit sooner or later . i just found out bops dont drink water . imaging if it cant drink water and ate a bag of chips cooked in lard with plenty of salt .its a pity they dont eat chips is it I had chips from a chippy just along the road from Murrayfield last year when I took my son to see Barcelona and those chips were deadly Gary. There were bodies stroon all round the doorway and all over the street. Then again it may have been the drink Paul.
superstar Posted July 21, 2009 Report Posted July 21, 2009 Blaz thats hapened to me 3 times with my YB's so far and am 12 birds down from it, also got 3 birds showing where they got hit! My last hope is to sell my family of Van Reets and try some more plain coloured birds in the hope it helps over the countryside that we have to fly the birds over. If that doesn't work and these campaigns come to nothing then I will be doing a whole lot more fishing instead
REDROCKET Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 sorry to here this gary hope they turn up mate all the best. where are you training them from.
Guest bigjohnwadd Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 Blaz, that`s just a taster of things to come, our oldbirds were beaten senseless by the sparrowhawk, throughout the winter/spring,but we lived in the knowledge endof april till sept we would have a bit of peace, but as soon as started training early may,our small team of distance birds were attacked as they left the basket 3 days on the trot, from different places.,and watch helpless as the pair of peregines toyed with them.so we gave upand put them straight into racing(safety in numberswe hoped)but still had bad damage,.and now found youngbird ripped aparton lawn when i came home from work, and found tell tell sparrowhawk feather among the mass of the pigeons, must be juvinile sparrowhawk learning its trade, but never before have we been hit by sparrowhawk in the full distance season, looks like we shall have to give up.
Guest Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 Blaz, I started off this season with 48 ybs and after 5 tosses from different liberation points I am now down to 17 and 3 of those have injuries inflicted through BOP strikes. I don't think colour matters a jot as 2 of my 3 injured birds are dark chequers. I seriously considered packing it all in, but I have decided I am NOT going to let these "flying cats" spoil my life long hobby.
Guest Owen Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 I am very sorry to hear about your trouble. Here where I live, we have a heck of a lot of peregrines. So every time we train in this area we are running the risk of a hit. Sparrowhawks are bad, but I don't think they are as bad in my immeadiate area as they are in some places. Then again we have Goshawks not far from here. And believe me, you really don't want them near you. If you think Sparrowhawks are bad, Goshawks are worse. They are the most persisant BOP you can imagine. When you said that you felt like packing it in, I can sympathise with you. I have felt the same sometimes, but I am still here soldiering on. I really don't want to be forced to give up by these horrible creatures and their suporters. About the only thing I have done which reduces the losses, is to train in small batches. Funnily enough, I have found that the birds are better when they are trained this way. All the best Owen

Bilco Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 Lay on the goose grease (Sainsbury's or Waitrose) into the neck/shoulder feathering and thickly dab salt into it. Percy etc will love it, and you'll love the result. It is what Baroness Young (Es-RSPB CEO) used to call "a noxious tasting substance") and they soon stop eating it.
tyson Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 its like pot luck you could go to point 2/3 times get no bother then go again and bang you get hit

Roland Posted July 22, 2009 Report Posted July 22, 2009 Lay on the goose grease (Sainsbury's or Waitrose) into the neck/shoulder feathering and thickly dab salt into it. Percy etc will love it, and you'll love the result. It is what Baroness Young (Es-RSPB CEO) used to call "a noxious tasting substance") and they soon stop eating it. A man after my own heart. It was actually devised by the RSPCA and the RSPB and as such is legal, indeed recommended. Lard of course is just as good for the results. Some use the juice from a Rhubarb leaf ... but that will kill any bird within the hour... deadly stuff that, better not use it I guess.
