Castleview Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 After a week on sitting youngsters, a pair of my pigeons have begun showing watery/slimey droppings. I think it could be stress because they are yearlings and this is their first round of youngsters. Rearing them has drained them alot, they've lost alot of weight but the yougsters are looking great. I did notice that they were rummaging through soil in the aviary, which I have sorted now, and since then they've had this diarrhea. I've been treating them with Coxiod, since none of the pigeons have been done anyway, and now they are showing signs of improving. I think it's mainly stress related but I also think I've had a bout of cocci with them as there were droppings near the soil they were rumaging through. BackYard Fancier did say that it's expected with youngsters.
Guest IB Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Make sure that if you have a problem that you've correctly diagnosed it. Remember well the first time I saw runny messy droppings in the nest box and thought it was loose droppings I was dealing with. Wasn't. If the box floor is wet it may be that the pair are messy feeders, pumping water everywhere bar down the youngsters throat. Mix water with droppings and you could be fooled into thinking you have loose droppings and the birds have passed them.
just ask me Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 yeah mate ib is probally right is there any green in them maybe the birds could do with a good multivitaim as well to prop tem up a bit just keep an eye out forthe green useally if u see that there is something wrong a pic here might be usefull
Peckedhen Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 I wonder why they've lost so much weight? Mine do slim down some when they are feeding youngsters but not dramatically. Do you have food in front of them all the time? :-/
Guest shadow Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 if the droppings are very loose from the y/b's as well it could be the parents are pumping them full of water rather than corn as it is easier for them normally its older birds that do this as they get tired of rearing. are they first round young or not' if they are wet feeding i would try to foster the young and not breed off that pair again some can wet feed always :-/
Wiley Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 well there obviosuly looking for something in the soil that you arent providing them? Id go with the idea that the birds have cocci,, going on how they've lost so much weight, but first i would check that you have plenty of vitamins available before treating them as they certainly have some form of difficency by rumaging in the soil,
Ian Gill Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Is there a smell from the droppings? Sounds like a stupid question but if there is its more than likely canker ..I noticed you mentioned they were picking around the bottom of the aviary ,,maybe a good idea to put a wire floor in the aviary to keep them from doing that. Once you sort the problem a good thing would be to give them a small amount of grit and pickstone fresh everyday ..dont leave grit and pickstones in the loft..
harky Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 had the same problem and was told it was a salt imbalance after treatment for three days the pigeons droppings were back to normal some were back to normal even after treating for just one day .contact kevin at medpet he will sort you out with something :)
peterpau Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 I'd go for canker and split the pair cos one of 'em aint no good. Funny I lost all mine that came from or produced wet nests
Lennut Tar Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 had the same problem and was told it was a salt imbalance after treatment for three days the pigeons droppings were back to normal some were back to normal even after treating for just one day .contact kevin at medpet he will sort you out with something :) Good one !!!!!!!!!! ;) they should always have oidized salt in front of them 24/7 when breeding in my view. Just buy it at the supermarket etc like I do & get a bit of cinnamon too, it won't hurt either. Enjoy.
Castleview Posted June 14, 2008 Author Report Posted June 14, 2008 I wonder why they've lost so much weight? Mine do slim down some when they are feeding youngsters but not dramatically. Do you have food in front of them all the time? :-/ Got food all the time. They're on the second round of eggs now. Droppings did toughen up, but become watery again. This time I have sand on the floor so that soaks up the water. Their youngsters have come on well and there droppings are ace. It's only these pair so I'm guessing it's just stress.
Castleview Posted June 14, 2008 Author Report Posted June 14, 2008 The droppings do not smell and it's not cocci so I've ruled that out. As for canker, that could be possible but there's no slime and no smell. As shadow said it's easier for them to pump them of water. As for Vitamins, they have maize every evening which has most vitamins in, they have sand now and a regular supply of bird grit, which they didn't have before. There droppings have improved alot, but now and again I get the odd watered down one. I helped them feed the youngsters by giving the babies some peas and maize to help their growth, I left a little of the crops empty and allowed the parents to feed them the water. Within a few days the youngsters droppings improved 80% with them being more tough than watery. I'll see how they handle their second round because it was their first ever youngsters.
pjc Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 if its 1 pair i would out them as its a weakness and will pass it to there young! Phil
ChrisMaidment08 Posted June 14, 2008 Report Posted June 14, 2008 if its 1 pair i would out them as its a weakness and will pass it to there young! Philso would i im afraid
Castleview Posted June 15, 2008 Author Report Posted June 15, 2008 had the same problem and was told it was a salt imbalance after treatment for three days the pigeons droppings were back to normal some were back to normal even after treating for just one day .contact kevin at medpet he will sort you out with something :) I haven't noticed much watery droppings today since I put some salt in the water. So it could have been a salt imbalance
schouwman71 Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Get a clay block,a bag of mixed grit ( the one with red grit in) and a bucket of natural red mineral ,mix it all together into a pot and refresh it everyday, and i bet your dropping are great within 12hrs and your birds will look great again.Dont think all your pairs are the same, some stress out when theres no natural grits available. ALF Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 I've always thought that if a pair of pigeons cant do whats natural and rear a nice pair of y/b's then they are'nt any good...they have to be able to rear easily without any problems or they are moved on
Aussie Lofts Australia Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Try hopper feeding pigeon pellets, and hand feed peas when breeding. Works for me.
schouwman71 Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 I've always thought that if a pair of pigeons cant do whats natural and rear a nice pair of y/b's then they are'nt any good...they have to be able to rear easily without any problems or they are moved on your managment i feel has got to be 100%,you carnt just blame a pair of birds before looking for the reason has to why there stresing out,has it might be the fanciers fault, not the birds.
