greenlands Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Do the flashing lights keep hawks away from your loft ? Has anyone tried them, are the a waist of time or have you had good results using them. I've just made one up and will install it before my young birds are put through,Having no problems at the moment(fingers crossed) but other lads are getting hammered. Any thoughts please. Lindsay.
Guest mick bowler Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Only one deterrent by all accounts Lindsay, and thats having none around
Guest Owen Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Lindsay, I have tried all the deterents I have ever heard of, without success. I think we underestimate the inteligence of hawks. There is only one way I have found that actually works. Use an aviary to get your birds out into the fresh air and let them do their bathing there. If there are any hawks about they will come to the aviary. If you have a couple of budgies or cockatiels they are marvelous at warning you that there is a hawk about. If and when you get the hawk hanging onto the wire, as they do, put a live trap against the aviary with a pigeon in it. Shut the other birds away and you will catch your hawk. The hawk will be scared to death by the experience and will avoid you and your birds like a plague after that. Job done.
Guest bigda Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 this would be handy for relocation troublesome birds don't think it would be hard to make and putting in a bit of lead to make it heavier :-/ as you can see its a cadge with fishing line nooses 30lb gut

ally mac Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 The flashing orange light definately worked for me last year, with the sparrow hawk at least, was getting hit every day like clock work. From the day I got it never lost one of the loft. Percy's a different story though :-/

Definately worth a try Lindsey, I think Jimmy's was working for him too since he got it. I was getting desperate last year, had YBs I needed out but new they would be lost if I didnt try something.
Roland Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Mating jacket works of course. The Arabs also have large trenches dug. Then with toughen Glass covering them, they allow a few birds into it. Percy likes the vew and swees in from a great hieght and speed. :-/
