Roland Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 dont think the sparrow hawk is the problem, would the eagle owl keep the percy away i dont think so :-/ Are you real ... or taking the pee :-/ You certainly can't be taken serious! :B :B They won't tolerate any Percy or Hawk, or any competition to the feeding area. Gosh the photo's displayed alone for all to see, and even on here makes me think you having a laff. Strueth. Give you a little hint, nudge nudge, just why do you think the RSPB cull and kill them ASAP :-/ :o
Guest vander mungo Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 ;D ;Dyes agree i wonder just how long it will take for a falkener to surface on here as there are lots of threads about bop,s we will get all the s hit about what eagle owls will do to this and that if they wont let us protect our birds then what do they expect us to do just roll over I DONT THINK SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! an ex fancier who breeds them where i am has had quite a few escape ;D
BLACK W F Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 Perhaps those who know how to care for them should post us with the correct information regarding keeping one as a pet and the way to look after them in the same way we do our pigeons. you would need more than 1 better with a couple of dozen could take them into the country just where percy is and fly them and if they all escape its just an accident disapointing i know but thats life :) :) :)
Guest frank dooman Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 ;D ;D an ex fancier who breeds them where i am has had quite a few escape ;D what a terrible shame tell him i feel for him and if he can arrange a few escapes up here i will buy him a pint or two to console him ;) ;) ;)
jimmy white Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 eagle owls can be bought very cheaply,, but illegal to release them into the wild !!!!!!!! need a licence to keep them,, any escapees [rung] can be caught by the rspb, and re-housed!!! , but if they breed in the wild [escapees or not] . . the yb,s should , by law, get the same protection as any other bird of prey,,, as they are then, indeed british wild birds ,,,,, but im not sure this does happen/?? ,, there are some flying free in the wild in the uk now,,,,,and breeding
david.j Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 are you still getting probs over there jim with hawks ?

Mealy Cock Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 This what I wrote to the RSPB. I was a RSPB member, I am concerned about the levels of birds of prey, practically Peregrine and Sparrow hawks and the devastating affects they are having on other species of birds, more so the pigeon all breeds. When are the RSPB going to reintroduce the Eagle owl And what are the RSPB doing to control this problem This is there reply Thank you for the email regarding the birds of prey in your area. Predators like birds of prey in an area shows that the bird population is doing well. If you feel you must deter the sparrowhawk, there are a few deterrents available, although their effectiveness is dependent on the availability of alternative feeding sites for the hawk. Rather than deter them, try to learn to admire the skill and beauty of this very specialised hunter. Bamboo canes on lawn to turn fast approach route into an obstacle course Half-full plastic bottles or CDs hung up in trees to scare the predators away. If feeders are under an overhang (eg under tree branches) hang strings like bead curtain strands a few inches apart around the perimeter of the overhang to slow down the hawk The GuardnEyes scarecrow balloon works by introducing, what the hawk believes to be, a higher level of predation, so that it in turn feels stalked. If alternative feeding areas exist, the hawk may be encouraged to move elsewhere Regarding Eagle Owls, Several pairs of eagle owls, the largest owls in the world, are now breeding in the wild in Britain, according to a new study. But it is unlikely they will ever be considered British birds as they escaped from a large pool of birds kept in captivity. With its prominent ear tufts, 6ft wingspan and its ability to kill birds as large as herons. the eagle owl is one of the most remarkable birds in Europe, nesting from Spain in the south to Russia in the north, but has always been absent from Britain. I hope this has shed some light on your query, thank you for your interest in the RSPB. Kind Regards, I think this answers some questions
blackswan Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 dont think the sparrow hawk is the problem, would the eagle owl keep the percy away i dont think so :-/[/qt t the sparrow hawk is taking more around the loft than percy,
Guest HEATHLOFTS Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 do you think they like the taste of cats
Guest strapper Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 why would an eagle owl keep hawks away from your birds?.... how would it do that? the eagle owl hunts at night..if anyone is thinking that because they hunt at night that would be ok...so how many hawk nests are near you?..and how would you have that owl return? you cant have the owl out on a perch when the birds are around the loft..same fright to them as hawks...so the whole idea is a non starter! owls are cheap to keep..ive had owls years a go. they are best left where they are....no help to pigeon fanciers ...unless they are in the wild.

Well this was the thinking none of my pigeons can see out of the lofts so i was thinking of while the birds are not exersizing sitting it on a fence post in the garden on a short leash the sparrowhawks are taking birds in my garden sitting on the lofts and fences and stuff so i thought by having a Eagle owl flapping about they would change there feeding pattern and go elsewhere with this being the larger predertor

Guest j.bamling Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 i was thinking the same thing i dont think i would have a problem with cats if i get one of them what stuff do you need to keep them? well i can get an load of Rabbits so i would feed mine that as Eagle owls like this stuff but the guy i would get to get one for me would have to tell me more about them first as i want to know everthing before i get one hopefully in the next month or two

pigeon princess Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Hi the prob is with any owl they need to be handreared there not like other bop that can be tamed so you would need to buy a handreared one more than likely you will have to do it yourself wich is a long time if its not hand reared you will not be picking it up it would deffo keep sparrowhawks awy if perched in the garden and your pigeons would get used to it as for percy the owl would just be perched in the garden the peregrine will just hit your birds out of sight unleess you could get the owl elavated then it could well be very affective
pigeon princess Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 yh im just looking it up now would an 8ft/6ft shed be ok? an 8 nby 6 shed is no where near the size these owls need they have prob near a 5 to 6 ft wingspan unless its perched down in there then moved into a large aviary
Guest j.bamling Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 you definatly want an avairy for them mind the shed doesnt need to be that deep must must be wide as these owls have a 6ft wingspan
