Guest wattle Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 i reckon in two years, you won,t be able to fly ,train or race your pigeons because of bops. if the are not stopped it will end our sport for good. :'(
ally mac Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 Ive lost 2 cocks this week, bit of a scunner as it was going well untill now!
Guest Cawdy Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 why not get one as a deterent my mate has a harris hawk and he sits it out all the time. the guy next door has fantails that live out and the sparrow hawk that is all over the other lofts inmy area wont go near the fantails im not saying its a magic solution but it might be worth a try also dunno if the authaurities might consider a capture program rather than a cull and the birds could be sold to falconers i know sparrow hawks are popular with falconers
Guest youngboy Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 its hurts to say but i believe you could be right :B but we to try get sptted eagle owls
Guest Cawdy Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 out of hand getting dont know what you mean by out of hand ?

Guest Owen Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 As far as I am concerned you could be right. I know that I will not be able to carry on if the BOP numbers are not brought into some reasonable levels. When I let the birds out, it has got to the stage when I can not stand to watch them being chased all over the sky by these vermin. I have to stand guard over the young birds to stop the hawks diving onto them. And when they are just flying around the loft, while they are learning to fly, they are attacked again. But this time it can be either a hawk or a falcon. The other day 3 cocks dived under the loft to get away from a hawk, and when I looked for them I saw a cat taking advantage of the situation. He was stalking them. What started out as a pleasant hobby has become a nightmare.
Guest bakes Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 i hate to say it but looks thats way theres goshawks, sparrowhawks, pergrines all around the area were im from the only way you stop this is by doing somethink your selfs wait for a cull by the time that happens and if it even does pigeon raceing would be history i tell you one thing though it just killed me seeing a young lad we helped out crying his eyes out after he was watching his birds loft exerciseing an a pergrine drop straight threw his ybs took one and other went in all directions managed to get them all in for him but there jumpy as hell old saying you wont anythink doing in life do it your self.
Guest wattle Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 everyday i clean the lofts, while doing it i used to let the birds out, but now i have to put the birds out into the aveirys and when i am finished cleaning the lofts i let them out, then i walk back up to the my house get my 12gauge and stand on a high wall so i can see in all directions then wait there for over an hour, until the birds land then sit on a garden chair while the birds have a pick around, i can,t leave them for one minute or a hawk will come or if there flying a peregrine comes, now i can,t seem to get any pleasure out of this hobby anymore, and the reason is because i am always on guard and can,t relax and enjoy the hobby that i have loved for over 30 years, everyday now i wonder why i bother it,s just to dam heart breaking.
Guest bluemorning Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 they wont cull, cawdys got the right idea let falconers apply to take spars from wild. problem nest sites first, but they wont touch peregrine. the good news is that spars are ready for breeding so the female which is our threat will be at nest site for a month or two.
Guest Cawdy Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 what realy get me is not just woth bop but any species that is causeing a problem (eg ravens cleaning out whole areas of moor) the conservation fannys try and make out that they are mega rare and endangered the perigrine is a prime example was out walking my dogs near overtown in lanarkshire and i i saw 3 in the space of a hour a male and a female to geither then a juvi female also see them all the time soaring about in the old ravenscraig site. now if they were as rare as the rspb try to make out both these location would be hoaching with twitchers (scum of the earth) tbh culling problem birds or relocateing them as i think the shu were doing. i dont think will work as another bird is just going to move into the teritory and eventualy figure out that there is an easy food source there and theres no way that a large scale cull is going to happen as tomany of the genera; public now have been brain washed by the rspb and are as obsesed with bop as they are an example being we have had a VERY large femle sparrow hawk hunting the lofts in my area and she was..........runover so we all thought problem solved but another female as moved in and i dont think it will be long before she starts targeting the pigeons again especialy as she will have young to feed and train soon ta Alan
