PATTY BHOY Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 Well folks, what is your thoughts on prisoner birds is it worth having them or not.
blaz Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 I will say know as any bird i have attempted to keep prisoner escapes. :'( :'(
owen101 Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 yes i belive it to be good as im a new starter and it means that i can buy proven birds that can be bred its a definite yes for me
DUBLINFLYER Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 yes we have some but the main aim is to reduce them by breeding top quality races so eventually we can put the proven racers into the stock loft... mite not work but its an ambition to have no prisoners but for the time being we will be glad to buy in quality birds to breed off and hopefully bolster our team of racers good question
grizzal Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 I think most people buying new stock in would keep them in, unless you buy latebreds and break them out as flying stock. jmo
Guest Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 i do have "prisoner " stock birds , but in all honesty ,would prefer them to be settled ,flying out (when safe) think me and the birds would be happier . andy.
Guest stb- Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 mystock birds are all prisoners. defo a yes on that one. to risky with your best birds being out with all the hawks about. started locking them up about 20 years ago when the sparrowhawks started to pop them of.
ritchie1 Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 a good friend of mine has stock birds and they are all prisoners and all a picture of health all in great condition and some of them never been out for 6 or 7 years so yes
Guest Gareth Rankin Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 Well folks, what is your thoughts on prisoner birds is it worth having them or not. Yes but at the same time "suffer no prisoners"
Delboy Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 Yes but at the same time "suffer no prisoners" Nice play on words there ;D
dwh Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 all stock prisoners but we ave small aviary it helps pair van der weyers got out on me lost cock but hen sat about for 4tnite then we got her in
Guest phillip Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 All my Stockbirds are kept in the stock section permanently due to moving house . To my opinion a good bird do not readily settle away from where it was settled origanally & given a chance will return to its original home from where it came
Roland Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 Simple, when having an established 'Race Team' certainly not. When getting an established team, then yes for 2 - 3 seasons even. Then you will can off load or get shot of for A. you will know their capabilities, and what they have / will likely produce. B. you will already have their genes flying, so don't need the extra costs and seeing them locked up. C. if not got many left for a race team after 2 seasons, then well past get shot off time eh as they aren't breeding the goods. D. Then if you want 'Stock' as a stand by for any reason, you will have proven racers coming through every season for that. E. Then the beauty is just keeping 12 - 15 pairs even which is ample and ALL will have earnt, or will have to earn a perch, even a VNest box. F. Further you will soon have permant 'Yard Sticks' to govern your loft.
Shortcut Lofts Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 Its a yes for me, always had them and probably always will.
dwh Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 All my Stockbirds are kept in the stock section permanently due to moving house . To my opinion a good bird do not readily settle away from where it was settled origanally & given a chance will return to its original home from where it came can't agree with that the better the pigeon we found the easier to settle
sapper756 Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 I have prisoner stock birds, however I am fortunate to have a large aviary attached to my stock section, but do like to see pairs flying free around the skies
Guest bakes Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 totally agree with mick aka gangsta as long as there got an aviary they can fly out into i cant see any problems with buying in stock to keep as prison birds all the best k.baker
Roundo Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 Always had prisoners and always will. They have access all day to an aviary, plently baths, grit & minerals etc... If they are kept in the best of health in a good environment they will continue to breed quality youngsters. Colin.
Guest phillip Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 Roland , yes I agree if you have proven birds which were bred and flown from your loft . In my case I had to move house & took my best birds with me to start from scratch . For that reason and as stated previously , I keep mine in captivity permanently but with wire aviary connected onto my stockloft and ample space in my breeding loft for movement . I have lost breeding birds bred by other fanciers & when they escaped , to date none of those that has escaped were recovered
holmsidelofts Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 110% prisoner stock thats the only way to build a family of birds, the last thing i would want is my top producing birds being lost or had by a hawk. Anyway they are to valuable to your success to let them out. Would never breed from my racers either until they have proven that they can win multiple prizes, by that point they are ready to be retired to the stock loft to continue on the family line. There is no right or wrong way but you have to way up the odds. for me its always 100% prisoner stock. always breed of winners and if they dont produce anything within 3 years get rid of them. jas.
Guest frank dooman Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 All my Stockbirds are kept in the stock section permanently due to moving house . To my opinion a good bird do not readily settle away from where it was settled origanally & given a chance will return to its original home from where it came i think this is 100% wrong all my best birds settled no probs. including 9/10 year olds that had many/many races even over the pond 1 was 6 times, it was my yearlings/2yr olds i had prob. with. good birds are not daft they will break easy i dont say there is any thing wrong with prisoners for a few years but i do like mine to fly out
