Just when you think you've got everything beaten,no young bird sickness everything going great it happens.Let the old birds out this mo.had a good fly landed on the garden spinning like tops. That'll do for me Portsmouth tonight looking good.Had a cuppa then opened the young bird door (08:00) and away they go,cleaned out etc .etc.09:00 not a bird in sight.10:00 still nothing 11:00 kicking a few sods round the garden but no young birds and weather getting worse by the minute. Now nearly 15:20Hrs two young birds in the loft and to hell with Portsmouth.Enoughs enough. Can't take this any longer.Had a bad start to the season breeding wise a couple of mates bred me some off their best, all gone. Not much hope now.Lindsay C

I think when youngbirds are getting fit and full of fly being kept in for a day gets them frustrated. They want to be out and fly.

If for any reason i can't let mine out for a day the food is cut back a bit so when they do go back out they are that bit hungrier and won't be so full of fly. IMO

greenlands sorry to hear you got a lot missing. But it really is the case that you should only worry about the ones you have back. I always say well (unless they dead) if those 10 have made it home then the other 16 should of too. We have all had these moments, sometimes we almost expect at least one a season, either from around the loft or training. I know a good few seasons ago this happened twice flying out, then i had two bad trainers too. I was left with 12 from 42. Our second race we had a stinker, guess what, my 12 were there home and dry, with a 1,2 3, to boot. That was there last race of the year, for me work done, what else could i teach them, they told me i could'nt. Best thing i ever did, and they proved to be the best team of yearlings and two yesr olds i have ever had the pleasure to own. i would say some 30 cards and 10 wins between them. I often wonder would they have done this had they not had them 4 tough testers, i doubt it. Chin up matey your faith in them if patient will repay you, and i'd bet you get a few more home, and hope you do too.

lindsay, hope youve got some more back mate, i can remember years ago jack hodgson lossing most of his young with only 9 returning, that year he won the y/bird averages in club, them 9 worked there way back for 5 days mate but they sure learned a lot, hope they keep turning in for you as the ones back will take some losing now mate.
