OLDYELLOW Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 most eggs are laid 7 to 10 days after pairing but put bowls in from the off to get them building there nests themselves

chris h Posted January 12, 2009 Author Report Posted January 12, 2009 Thanks alot. Anyone else do it this way and do you get good results
Blue Chequer Pied Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 Hi Chris. Get some tobacco stalks or straw and stick in a corner of the loft. The birds will soon lift and carry the materials to the bowls. If your birds are getting out at the moment ( dependent on raptor problems where you are) a good idea to have the materials outside the loft and the birds will spend hours lifting and carrying in and out of the loft. This can help burn off any winter fat there may be. Personally this is one of my favorite times of the year sitting watching the cocks go in and out of the loft with nesting materials. Nest building also helps strengthen the bond between cock and hen. Dont get too hung up on how the build some will take masses of material into the bowl and others will take just a few twigs or bits of straw. Paul.
pigeonscout Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 I Am breeding on the natural system. I have my cocks and hens in together. I was just wondering when i put in my nest pans. And do i make there nests or let them do it themselves??? I like to put bowl in from day one then about the 4th day I put nest felt in bowl and some straw on the floor. I have found they dig holes in the felt if it is in from day one. If they are last years young birds and will be flying to a different loft or section put the straw on the garden so they have to fly in and out to build the nest. They will be in and out every 2 min's and this gives them confidence to trap to the new section.
andrecrock Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 Bowls in from day one,day 2 nest felts and from day 3 i put a few pine needels in the bowl and on the floor so they can start building....
pjc Posted January 12, 2009 Report Posted January 12, 2009 I don't normally put bowls in until day 3 so the cock has the whole box to drive the hen then bowl in and plenty of good clean dry straw to help themselves from. As said above, some will build huge nests and some just don't bother. Phil
chris h Posted January 13, 2009 Author Report Posted January 13, 2009 I got new nest felts and tobacco stalks today. Thanks for the good advice.. HOW OFTEN DO YOU CHANGE THE FELTS.
phillips Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 i always put the nest bowls in 4 days after pairing with lots of straw you can put em in on the first day but i find that the birds just soil the bowls thanx jason
kirky Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 when i pair my birds i dont put the bowls in untill the fifth day then straw day after this way all eggs will be laid within 48 hours of each other if bowls are put in too soon some will build nests same day and within two days will start driving the hen before she is due to lay.
Guest IB Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 I give the pair the run of the empty nest box for 4/5 days. By this time the birds are going backwards and forwards OK to their correct boxes, I then put in their nestbowl & nest felt, sprinkled with stalosan. I encourage the cocks to bring in their own nest material from the garden (conifer hedge clippings, dead flower stems etc), most of which I remove when the eggs start chipping, so that the youngster hatches out onto, and sits on the nest felt.. Straw goes in at about 12 days old, covers half the box floor. Idea is to get the youngster out of the bowl onto the straw so the pair can go back down on their next round of eggs in their own bowl. If the nest felt is dirty (unusual) I turn it.
frank-123 Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 i normally use tobacco stalks but this year i am using coconut stalks i never use straw in case the beasties are hiding in the inside of the stalks
Guest IB Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 i never use straw in case the beasties are hiding in the inside of the stalks Get mine from a pet shop. Its processed and pressed flat as a pancake, no hiding place for anything. It's also sprinkled with stalosan which kills insects, their eggs & grubs, so no danger of bcoming contaminated.
frank-123 Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 where do you get your stalosan from ib?
