Read everything you can get your hands on. Dont be dissapointed if things dont go as planned. eg; hens dont all lay in exactly ten days, birds will not excercise for one hour every time you let them out. Give yourself three years to build up a decent team and expect to win races after that. Most of all enjoy the hobby, dont take it too seriously and always be a good loser. ;D

if u are in a club then get advise from the man who has the oldest birds ,, he will tell you how to race the same bird over and over each season , and when selecting the breed you wanna fly stick to the one breed until you know wat they will or wont be capable of then maybe u can intruduce other strains ,, oh and dont be afraid to ask
