Guest Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 I was just wondering what everyone's favourite condition to send their birds to the long races were. I usually race to 10 day eggs but I do hear a lot of people say you can't beat a youngster to race back to. Interested to hear your opinions.
snowy Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 darren, never raced as yet, but it seems as all that i have spoken to says 1-6 day youngster. hope this helps
perk Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 found myself hens on ten day eggs perform better, some thing to do with cycle of them producing red blood cells ?
ribble Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 gone for 1-6 day old yougster, but it all depends on the bird.keep your eyes peeled and make notes.
southbankhs Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 we have never been much into the distance but i think it would be best attempted with hens which have just layed their first set of eggs of that year ??
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 I often take eggs from nests and replace with plastic eggs then about 15 - 17 days put a bug in the egg so it has movement then about 2 hours before basketing put a freshly hatched baby in the nest make sure the traps are open on race day so the birds ( hens and cocks ) dont smash through side of loft trying to get in I have won MANY races this way although it is hard to set this up
carl Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 I agree with rose,10 day eggs or 1-6 day old youngbird,i would be happy either way.
andy Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 500-550 MILES ON THE DAY. I FIND YOU CANT BEAT A WIDOWHOOD COCK PROVIDED THEY ARE BRED FOR THE JOB, THAT INCLUDES FLYING INTO SCOTLAND WHERE THE MAJORITY OF THE FANCIERS PREFER ONE OF THE NEST CYCLES MENTIONED ON THE POLL, MAYBE IM SLIGHTLY BIASED AS I ONLY FLY WIDOWHHOD COCKS AT ALL DISTANCES.
Guest shadow Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 I agree with andy on this one fly all my races with cocks or hens on widowhood
Guest WINGS 04 Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 ANDY I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY THAT TO FLY 500-600 MILES IN TO THE WEST OF SCOTLAND IS NOT THE SAME AS FLYING IN TO THE EAST AS YOU CAN BE FLYING THE SAME DISTANC AS THE WEST AND THE EAST SECTION IS FINESHED BEFOR THE WEST HAS STARTED BUT I WILL BE GOING ON WIDOWHOOD AS WELL
MsPigeon Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 I often take eggs from nests and replace with plastic eggs then about 15 - 17 days put a bug in the egg so it has movement This is going to sound funny but it works! : I ordered mexican jumping beans off the internet last year and the plastic nest eggs that come apart. Put a bean in and it does the trick slugmonkey, just like your bug but it is good for the whole season. They are still till they get warmed up and then they start jumping like crazy in there.
jimmy white Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 agree with andy, i would say bred for the job, fed for the job, and managed for the job, , but must say its easier said than done,as im sure andy will agree theres a lot of hard work involved " dedication is the key word"be it natural or widowhood.
andy Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 AGREE 100% JIMMY.........WINGS04- EAST SECTION FINISHED BEFORE WEST SECTION--- CANNOT TOTALLY AGREE ON THIS ONE EXCEPT FOR MAYBE Y/B NAT. THROUGH MY WORK IM IN DAILY CONTACT WITH LOTS OF FANCIERS FROM YOUR AREA (LANARKSHIRE FED) & THROUGH LISTENING TO THEM OVER THE YEARS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THEIR SEASON SEEMS TO BE YOUR FED OPEN RACE FROM LILLE WHICH THEY SEND THEIR BEST AND MOST BIRDS TO. THIS IS MAYBE A DISTRACTION ON THEM SENDING THEIR BEST TO THE NATIONALS. AS YOU AND I KNOW THE HARDENED NATIONAL MEN IN YOUR AREA ARE ALWAYS WELL IN OUT THE CHANNEL. THE SAME APPLIES IN CENTRAL AREAS THERE IS A"DISTRACTION" WITH OTHER ORGANISATIONS WHEREAS IN MIDLOTHIAN,EofS & S/B THERE ISNT. FOOD FOR THOUGHT OR DEBATE AS ME & WORK COLLEAGUES DO EVERY YEAR AT NATIONAL TIMES..
Diamond dave Posted February 8, 2006 Report Posted February 8, 2006 Ms. Pigeon Ive used an earth-worm up to now but I am interested to hear whether you've managed to hatch out any of these jumpin beans!!!!!?????
MsPigeon Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 Ms. Pigeon Ive used an earth-worm up to now but I am interested to hear whether you've managed to hatch out any of these jumpin beans!!!!!????? ;DLOL ;Dhehehe ;D gosh!!! wouldn't that be a surprise! ;D ;D
carl Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 If you dont have any eggs chipping out slip a ball bearing in the pot egg everytime the bird moves the eggs the eggs rattle,i also tried putting a earth worm in a pot egg but the poor worm was mush when i opened the egg up.
jimmy white Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 wings, i would allways say the wind can influence the race, but getting a bird bang on form ,at the right time, will overcome many obstacles, usually the winner is comming direct home, i do here what your saying about distances, but that debate can go on and on, keeping a neutral view of things, it can be said that andy is flying the same distance as cockburnspath, which, if driving by car would be quicker to drive to you, than drive to cockburnspath, i think the way you are going im sure youll do well in the nationals, i certainly hope you do. best of luck,,, dont let the position bother you it would just make the winner better :) p,s andy flies about furthest west in his fed, by a long chalk, but he gets them.
Guest WINGS 04 Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 JIMMY ALL I AM SAYING IS THAT IN 95% OF SNFC RACES THE WEST BIRDS HAVE TO TURN IN TO THE WIND AS MOST RACES ARE S/W WINDS I AM NOT TRYING TO TACK ANYTHING FORM THE WINNERS OR ANY ONE FLYING IN THEYS HARD RACES BUT THE RACE RESULTS SHOW THAT IT IS BETTER TO FLY FROM EAST THAN IT IS TO FLY FROM THE WEST. ANDY MOST OF THE MEMBERS FROM THE FED THAT I NO WILL NOT GO TO THE SNFC AS THEY THINK THEY WILL NOT HAVE MUCH OF A CHANS OF WINNING IT BEFOR MY CLUB SPLIT THERE WAS 27 RACING LOFTS BUT ONLY 5 MEMBERS IN THE SNFC BUT I WAS TOLD THAT THERE USED TO BE 20+ MEMBERS IN IT AND I ASKED WHEY THEY ARE NOT INIT KNOW THEY ALL SAID THE SAME . PS I WOULD JUST LIKE TO GET ONE FROM 500+MILES
jimmy white Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 wings, nobody would like to see you getting one than me, and i know if ladbrookes were laying odds, who would be the favs, but the favs dont allways win there have been many good winners in the past ,in the west, its just a case of getting the bird and the conditions right on the day, and as i said before ,a bird right on the day can beat many obstacles, best of luck to you, youll do it. IF YOU THINK YOU ARE BEATEN YOU ARE, IF YOU THINK YOU DARE NOT YOU DONT. IF YOUD LIKE TO WIN ,BUT THINK YOU CANT, ITS PRETTY WELL SURE YOU WONT. LIFES BATTLES DONT ALLWAYS GO TO THE STRONGER OR LOUDER MAN, BUT SOONER OR LATER THE MAN THAT WINS, IS THE MAN WHO THINKS HE CAN. ;D ;D ;D ;D AND YOU CAN , JIMMY
Guest slugmonkey Posted February 15, 2006 Report Posted February 15, 2006 The wind plays an important role but you can overcome it we flew straight west this year I am giving 20 miles to the guys north of me and we have usual winds out of the south 10 - 15 with a couple of 20 - 30s and I still won races, I won a 100 by 3 minutes with an 8 bird drop, I was also 2nd champion loft in a year that I shouldnt have had a sniff so what Jimmy says is true good healthy birds win races no matter what the conditions
ken Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 racing to a 1 day to 6 day ybird best if first ybird of the year hens will forget about eggs after a few days in basket but will never forget a ybird + they have to be bred for the job wright feeding wright tranning and you will get them + a bit of luck
sapper756 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 ARE THE CONDITIONS BEING POSTED, THE DAY OF BASKETING OR THE DAY OF LIBERATION?
