Guest spin cycle Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 how much space is required per hen in the 'perching' section (sq. ft) and what is the max. no of pairs in a racing section . i have 2 sections of 12 natural pairs....could i cut down to 1 section of 20 on roundabout provided i have enough space overall.
Guest spin cycle Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 HOW BIG IS YOUR LOFT,ken without wanting to get into a 'debate' on stocking density, i stock at about 2 1/2 sq ft a bird...which seems ok. the loft i want to use is 6x12 so i would have to extend it..... but by how much? what size should the hen 'perchery' be and is 20 in a group impractical management wise ?
aye ready Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 put your hens on V perches i had 30 hens in a 6 x 6 section and the hens have won 2 of my 1st's this year
Guest spin cycle Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 put your hens on V perches i had 30 hens in a 6 x 6 section and the hens have won 2 of my 1st's this year thanks for the reply do you have wire sloping floors (prevent pairing ?) and do they fly to a single section of 30 cocks ?
Guest Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 put your hens on V perches i had 30 hens in a 6 x 6 section and the hens have won 2 of my 1st's this year thats what ive done for 3 years but will be changing that next year martin i think all they need is 5ft x30ins with a strap partition and sloping floor the sec will be 5x5 for air/ventilation but sectioned of at 30ins. to stop them pairing up thats the worst thing about roundabout thats why i paired up my hens where in very good condition i could not stop them pairing that ruins the whole system
aye ready Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 thanks for the reply do you have wire sloping floors (prevent pairing ?) and do they fly to a single section of 30 cocks ? all birds trap to the cocks section after exercise,no fancy floors if any hens pair one of them is removed into the garage then the next night that one is replaced and the other offender is removed this go's on till marking night and then the following week if required but my own don't really start to pair up till about three quart's of the way into the season
Chris Little Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 Our hens are locked in boxes. They are basically deep perches with a big gate to lock them in, they are also shaded
Guest Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 Our hens are locked in boxes. They are basically deep perches with a big gate to lock them in, they are also shaded thats interisting chris i couldnt go through all that bother of boxing them up twice a day but how does the dark thing work with the moult and how long do you darken them for each day?
Guest spin cycle Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 so....the area for 20 hens would need to be about 20 sq ft ...with some sort of strategy to avoid pairing...and having the hens trap into a single section of 20 cocks needn't be a problem ?

Chris Little Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 Its a doddle Frank. The boxes are like small nest box size with one half covered with plywood which gives them that shaded privacy. One the hens have had their feed / water I open a large gate and they pop in their own box then I close the gate again, no catching required.
REDCHEQHEN Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 what is the problem when they 'pair'? they lay eggs -show no interest in the cocks (which is their motivation) and lose form

Do you feed them while in the cocks section or when they have returned to there own section?

Chris Little Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 Do you feed them while in the cocks section or when they have returned to there own section? They trap and get fed in their own section. No probs Frank, pop down for a peek one day
