Long Distance racing is very diffrent compared to sprint / middle distance racing where as middle and sprint racing there are better familys for them with long distance i think you have to produce the long distance by working with diffrent pigeons crossing etc getting what you want buildinga  team able to cope with the distance required, for us we have crossed odd longer distance birds which can cope with the distance De Hoogh & ZN, M.Gilbert, G.Glbeert, DeWeerdt etc crossing them with the klaks which put that little extra in to them

i would definately agree with rose " time and patience" and im quite sure rose would agree that its easier said than done,, the pitfalls the downs, will try your patience to the limit, its often hard enough to keep them till their mature enough, with all the obstacles in the way, nowadays,,but to see one drop to you from , 5to 600 miles plus, is really some feeling  :'( :'(  ;D ;D

Raymond Moleveld in Holland has the most outstanding distance family you would ever want to see and they are all based around a cock called De Lightenberg! I raced these for the first time this year as babys and they have been brilliant esp in hard head winds, one grand daughter won the club last week by 15 mins.

what i mean is a family with very little outcrossing done with it from a breeder who picked up where the last one droped off and not gone and crossed into other familys

Plenty not worth a jot.

Any, and I believe all, were only great when an outcross was introduced. Then out crosses are constantly introduced. Hence the 'Name' only relates to the person(s) who made the birds - so called strain - famous.

Now a great hen that is saturated with the so called great blod, is usually a lot smaller and can hardly fly to the roof tops,

bill pentland had the record for over a thousand miles ,a few years ago, its been broken since, but the birds breeding was a mixture off all the old scottish distance birds , no particular breed just generations of distance paired to distance, and trying them out all the time, i knew bill well, sadly no longer with us

with 1st club, 1st fed, 1st two counties combine, 2nd three counties combine 3943birds velocity 1254ypm

but bear in mind that the same cheq cock topped the club, fed, combine in may 06 out of Mangotsfield 136miles
