Milers

I know that years ago in this area the Miners used to race milers. Now I would like to find out how they did this. I have asked around in the area but no-one knows much about it.

What sort of birds did they use? Was it cocks and hens or just one sex? How were these birds trained? Did they all fly to the same area such as an alotment or could they fly to individual lofts as we do today? I would be pleased with any information that anyone has and I would be especially interested in books on the subject. Perhaps this sort of flying exists in another country. Where is it done and more importantly how?

I know it still goes on around Barnsley because the guys have talked about it when I have been down. I am hoping to go and have a look next time I am down. There was an interesting article in the BHW last week or the week before.

hi there milers are still flown every sunday morning in sth yorks an article on this club was in the bhw a couple of weeks ago any one can go and watch them fly 52 weeks of the year nothing stops them racing good bunch of lads

have kept that article and one or two others on the milers . i feel if i am still treading the earth in 20 years time ,normal racing will have dimineshed ,and this may take over on a local basis .                                andy.

hi owen, i dont know if you saw it in last weeks BHW monk bretton of barnsley milers

each member had to select one young cock as per rules that would see every member win

£450 to £100providing it made it back to the paddock where all the lofts are .

five weeks before the race lots were drawn with the various release points allcated 1-8 it ment no

one had a advantage they only had 5 weeks to train there one and only cock from that mark and the best way

is for the cock to be sent driving back to his hen who is clipped down waiting in side the loft and the cock as to land right

in his nest box at the same speed as flying , the birds are tossed in 2 mins intervals , the winning cock a blck pied did the mile in 51 seconds

a vel of 2070 winning £450 not bad for 51 seconds work , this is just the short version of the artical cheers kev
