Keepsmilingqueen Posted December 3, 2006 Report Posted December 3, 2006 Hi other than routine compulsary vaccination for PMV, what other things do you treat for routinely throughout the year if anything ? im sure the only thing dad did was vaccinate and worm, but iv been told by a fancier in my club that i must also treat for canker and cocci, id always thought this was up to the individual fancier to decide if they wanted to treat for this ?? what are the pros/cons to routine preventitive treatment ?? thanx in advance sharron
REDCHEQHEN Posted December 3, 2006 Report Posted December 3, 2006 Both of these can be seen through a microscope Sharron, cocci in their droppings, along with worm eggs, and canker through doing a crop swab, there is no need to treat if they haven't got any of these things. The only thing compulsory is the PMV vaccine, and don't forget to keep a copy of the vaccine sheet in your car when you take them training.

Hi redcheqhen was interested in your remark about keeping a copy of your vaccination sheet in the car when training,is this something that you,ve been advised to do up your way as this is the first time i,ve heard anyone memtion it.
schyphos Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 Hi Sharron, I use a preventitive watering program, designed to have the pigeons immunity system at its optimum level. The following is my program,i hope you find it useful. Saturday -on return from racing- Electrolytes & honey in water. Sunday- am-Avisan or any water sanitizing product in water.Pm-Probiotic in water. Monday -Probiotic in water. Tuesday-Alternate weekly between Garlic or Johnsons tonic. Wednesday-Cider vinegar in water. Thursday-Cider vinegar in water. Friday- Plain water nothing added. This will keep your birds internally healthy.I do also vaccinate against PMV & Pox. And i do have the droppings tested regularly for Bacterial infections,Worms,Cocci & Canker. And only treat if instructed by vet.Except for a few treatments against Canker,i have never had to treat for anything else.

Hi redcheqhen was interested in your remark about keeping a copy of your vaccination sheet in the car when training,is this something that you,ve been advised to do up your way as this is the first time i,ve heard anyone memtion it. This was stipulated by DEFRA, and there are other things that have to be done if you train birds belonging to others ( I don't, so not sure about this) so we keep copies in our cars and my husband has copy in HGV 'just in case', I do know people have had to show their vaccination sheets......................
REDCHEQHEN Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 Some 'people' have nothing better to do than hang around in car parks that are frequented by pigeon fanciers training their birds, waiting for them to release their birds - North Yorkshire moors, DEFRA officials - seriously bud. and ask to see your vaccination certificate - its never happened to me because I can never find the car parks ( I think I have tunnel vision - and only look ahead - so I miss lots of things............LOL) Seriously, I ain't joking
jimmy white Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 you maybe right tammy,,,the w.h.o ,,,the world health organization , the man from the who could stop you and ask for details, ;D, but i think somehow it will be the man from the dept for envireonment for food and rural affairs,,[ defra] ;D or even the man from the pru. if you owe him ;D
jimmy white Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 hi sharon youll find r. ch. h .bang on , but if you cant get the droppings tested regularly would be wise to treat them for cocci, worms every few months , i was allways against this, until speaking with the vet" a doctor" at the s a c , he told me this was best [if you cant get droppings tested] but off course this is not compulsory.
Guest cloudview Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 this might sound daft re preventative treatments where does it all end ,treat for worms cocci for example on sunday ok they now clear ,but it wont stop them picking it all up again on tuesday . its arollercoaster scenario . why take an aspro if you have,nt got a head ache .
REDCHEQHEN Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 . why take an aspro if you have,nt got a head ache . because it thins the blood, helps to prevent heart attacks and strokes and has been shown to prevent bowel cancer
