Until I started doing the full showing calender,ie about 20 outings over an8 month period I had no health problems whatsoever, yet in the last 6 months I have had 2 outbreaks,1 respitory,1 possibly streptoccus, since the loft is immaculate and nothing else has changed management wise I know the birds must be picking things up at shows.I always believed antibiotics harmful to the immune system and that the only people who needed them had dirty over crowded lofts, yet I have had to use them twice in 6 months. It has been suggested to me that the only way to avoid future trouble is to incorporate antibiotics into the annual medication programme on a routine basis. This advice comes from a proffessional fancier and the programme would be worked out by him,I would like to know how many fanciers agree or dissagree or any suggestions,I know this is a contraversial subject but please be honest

WELLI  WOULD NEVER GO DOWN THE ROAD OF USING ANTI BIOTICS AS A STANDARD PRACTICE, DEFINATELY THE WRONG WAY TO GO, SHOULD ONLY BE USED WHEN THERE IS A NEED FOR THEM BECAUSE USING THEM ALL THE TIME WILL ONLY MAKE YOUR BIRDS DEPENDANT ON THEM, THE PROFESIONAL FLIER THAT GAVE YOU THIS ADVICE MUST HAVE SOME SERIOUS PROBLEMS IF HE HAS TO KEEP USING THEM ALL THE TIME, STEER CLEAR OF THEM UNLESS YOU REALLY NEED TO

chrissy try and get the book Pigeon Health Management by Dr Colin Waker an Australian vet. Go on the Racing Pigeon web site. No "antibiotics" but the best treatment routine I've ever seen. Your birds will always come into contact with birds that are not treated, and carrying infections that they've not encounterd so why wouldn't your birds pick up infections?

Do not do it myself and could not advise others to do it.

Oft repeated statement from vets is that you can't do a preventatitive treatment for a bug that your birds haven't got.

If you feel the birds are bringing something back from shows, then there is surely some biosecurity lapse there? I'd recommend you look at a natural treatment for when the birds come back from the shows, for example Strike2 from Gem, a probiotic, a prebiotic and a garlic preparation (kills virus, bacteria, fungus, mould & yeast, shifts trichomonads, cocci and ascarids [worms]  , a 3-in-one product ). Strike2 , goes on their food I believe.

I think the last poll of this type was around 18 months ago, Chrissy when membership was maybe 300? It arose from a thread in which it was claimed that fanciers had to administer medications routinely in order to be at the top i.e. win races.

And again from memory, there was no 'No' option in that poll , only a list of medications and 'a which do you use? question'. total votes = 14. Not accurate by any means but 'users' represented about 4% of membership.

Thaks for the info Bruno. What you said about top fliers saying they use them is exactly why I posted the poll/question.The guy advising me is one of the UK's elite and he also said the top show winners last season do the same thing.Who or what do you believe? All I know is he wins alot at top level and I am wanting to do the best I can with my birdsI suppose my next question should be how many of the yes voters are succesful and how many of the no votes are succesful

well I am one of the no voters Chrissy and over the last three years I have been the highest prizewinner in our club , have taken fed tickets so anti biotics have never helped me to win, just birds that fly under their own ability and steam

MOST FLYERS ARE INFLUENCED BY OTHERS IN WHAT THEY USE,

aye if you are a sheep and just follow on

If I get sick I go to the doctor. When we had an extention we had a builder. When we move house we will see a solicitor. When it comes to pigeons, we follow the advice of Dr Colin Walker. Top Australian pigeon flyer and vet. Maybe that makes me a bloody sheep too. Then there aint many birds for my pigeons to follow.

Think we may be talking about two different things, Colin Walker doesn't push the routine use of antibiotics... every one of his programmes starts with a test and if necessary treat ....

He also says early in Chapter 29 Program Development in the Race Loft : 'I think we all prefer to avoid medication during racing if possible, but at the same time don't want our birds' performances to be compromised by health problems.'

I don't think that can be described as 'routine use of antibiotics'.
