chico123 Posted November 30, 2008 Author Report Posted November 30, 2008 i totally agree i just wandered why and if anyone used it if your drinkers are clean and sterile why do they use it
jimmy white Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 hi chico here dose anyone practice the use of iodine in thier birds drinking water dose it benefit the birds and in what way at what rate is it used cheers chico aquas iodine , for some unknown reason is very rarely used nowadays , maybe because its too cheap this is an exellent supplement for pigeons after a race ,or pairing up, ,etc ,,,even feeding yb,s , this is a mild antiseptic , that will clean any wounds , around the beak , wattles area, also aiding in the spread of some infections , if i remember correctly" lugols solution" is actually aquas iodine ,, and the dose is a few drops added to the drinking water
dava Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 i use lugols iodine 9 drops per litre give them it for 5 days makes there skin clean and pink and there feathers nice and silky after the 5 day s just use it twice a week helps keep the tricho count down a top long distance man in belgium uses it this way and never needs to treat for canker
Big Davie Posted November 30, 2008 Report Posted November 30, 2008 Lugols Aqueous Iodine is an excellent tonic for thyroid gland function, and for keeping crop fungal infections at bay, 10ml to 10 litres of water once per month in winter and once per fortnight during racing. Aqueous = water so it is already watered down, have used it for years. Davie

jimmy white Posted December 1, 2008 Report Posted December 1, 2008 not so long ago you could buy this over the counter in most chemists a big bottle ,very cheaply [aquas iodine] , for some reason unknown to me you cant seem to get it now yet again the pigeon supplement firms , make money from the pigeon fancier
Guest IB Posted December 1, 2008 Report Posted December 1, 2008 We had a previous thread on Iodine a year or so ago, and I remember from that 'ordinary' iodine is a disinfectant and is also used externally as an antiseptic, on skin wounds for example, but it isn't soluble in water. Aqueus Iodine is iodine chemically altered so that it will dissolve in water. Don't know much more about it, but it sounds like a simple water-steriliser. My opinion is based on my experience using Vanodine 18, an iodine-based disinfectant that can be used in the drinking water as a water steriliser. The manufacturers are quite clear that it has no effect inside the pigeon. I would doubt aqueus iodine has any internal affect on the pigeon.
