Jan Aardens come from Jan Aarden of Seenbergen holland and are mainly bred through the lines of the Zilvervos the 131 of Jan De Weert and 05 of Anton Lightenberg. These lines produced in turn the Old Doffertje, Dolle, De Lightenberg, Bonte Koppel, Barcelona 1 & 2 for fanciers like Lazerons, Van Geel, Van Der Wegen, Nico Volkens and Sam De Jong.

The 131 was own by Jan De Weert and the 05 by Lightenberg, both from Steenbergen.

Comines, Rapidos Buss. Maes Alois (Belg) All White Pigeons.

This year just come in, Barker X Delbar. V D Wegen, & Eric Cannon. Gift birds  from good freinds of mine,  two more gift pairs from a NFC winner. So i will have 6 pair of good stock to bred & race next year, after being away from racing for six years. Was a silent partner for four years.   ( And i feel like i'm 20 years old again, keen as musted) at the age of 71.

My loft is only 8' x 12'

Happy Days are here again ;D ;D ;D

I do agree with you on one point, Kirky, I think there is a time limit on the amount of years he has had the pigeons. I would say after 5 years of Blending breeding racing, he has had  them years, He can truey call them his Own. "If they are ones you have blended yourself."

Now that the foundation of my loft is complete i will add yearly a brother/sister child of the Tarbes NFC winner (if i can buy one) to blend with Raymonds Blood as its the race i most want to win.

Ive had them for over 10 years now and have 5 or 6 generations in my birds & have got to no them like the back of my hand, from the 50 or 60 that I had at the begining I cut them down to 25 prize winners over the first 2 years, and as said have only added winners too them, after I have used them as a cross I let them go to other lofts.

I have one only strain of pigeon as far as I am concerned. Mine. I started with birds said to be this that and the other thing. And who would seriously believe that anybody keeps their pigeons pure for tens of years? Even the most dedicated breeder must try unrelated birds. I am only interested in winning pigeons. I pair birds that are good at their job together. My minimum requirement for a cock to breed is that it must have won 4 or more times. As I am primarily widowhood flyer and I can only judge the hens on the young bird results.

I have no problem with good hens because I always end up with good ones each year. To help me with my decisions, I give birds away each year so that they can be tried by other people. And besides that I don't have to take the hens too seriously because the cocks will be paired to roughly ten hens each, on the bull system. If a hen does not produce with a certain cock, and providing that she is out of good blood she may get a chance with a differant cock.

I find the idea of pairing birds together because they are said to be of a certain family, never mind a strain, a big joke. Perhaps it is worth mentioning that I have bought pigeons, and paid out a lot of money, only to find out that I have wasted my time and money. Eventually I used common sense and started doing what livestock breeders do when they are serious about the results they need. And that is to select on the basis of the only thing that matters in the end. Performance.

Is that really all that matters..?

yes that is all that matters to me. The last thing I want, is to send birds to races when they have no chance of getting home. Apart from the fact that it is disapointing to keep loosing birds, it is very cruel. Besides that, I want to feel respect for my birds because I know that they are good at what they do. I will continue to work to make the birds I keep reach the highest standards possible because at the end of the day they will be valued, not just by me but also by others.

If I did not think this way I would go in for showing or plain pets.

I guess so.. you race birds to win, you breed to show. Sometimes the best birds are the ugliest... now have I just opened a can of worms?   :B

only soonjens and yes pure,  dont think there is such as thing all strains have been crossed somewhere along the line. just look at the great george busschaert any  bird that came into his loft became a busschaert.

How can you say that you have pure Soontjens? If you have had this strain of bird for a while and bred them to do well in a certain type of competition, which is inevitably differant from the one they were originally developed for, they will have changed. If you then introduce crosses, they will change. If you inbreed, and that will mean that you will inbreed for or against something, they will change.

And finally, the originator of the strain will have used outcrosses and worked on differant families and lines to create a performance lead family. It is unlikely that you would follow exactly the same breeding plan of the originator, so they will change.

So what about your pure Sootjens now?

:) :'( :)
