Guest rodders Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 i had a simular thing last year with some i fetched in 1st 1 looked a bit off in morning so seperated 4hrs later box was swimming and bird dead noticed another next day so took out loft but gave a drop of baytril straight down throat for 2 days and it picked up
Guest IB Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 All of these viruses have been identified in pigeons, and some have been written up in articles in BHW going back maybe 3/4 years, certainly adeno- and circo- have. If you are having over a hundred deaths, definite need for professional help there, if none of the local vets can help, then maybe Welsh Assembly Government's Animal Health Department should be called in. Last thing you want is an epidemic.
pjc Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 As most of us know IB, when it comes to most vets and pigeons its a waste of both time and money. The guy involved did send droppings and swabs to be tested which came back as Adenovirus and treat with Baytril. After a week of Baytril he was still losing the same amount of birds and it was clearly having no effect. He was then advised by a Nigel Cowood to use a different antibiotic which again had no effect. Once he stopped the antibiotics and started boosting the imune system backed up with vitamins they started to turn the corner and he has now been ok with no more losses for a couple of weeks. The problem is labs don't give the swabs/virus time to develop mainly because fanciers using them are desperate for an instant answer instead of saying the result won't be ready for 7-10days they guess at the answer! ChrisMaidment08 Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 never a truer word spoken i ues mrs morris in newport she is exelent on birds paul smith always quoates canker
Guest IB Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Accept most of what you say, pjc, but first and foremost its a vet specialising in birds that you want, an avian vet. Most vets specialise in companion animals, dogs, cats, rabbits and the like and know nothing, or next to nothing about birds. Anyone who prescribes Baytril (an antibiotic) for a viral infection, doesn't seem to know even the basics about disease treatment. Giving an antibiotic to cure a viral infection is in the same league as fitting a handbrake on a canoe, and as effective.
pjc Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Adenovirus, isn't a virus hense the reason they prescribe antibiotics. Phil
just ask me Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 sometimes though antibiotics can be given for secondary infections that the origanall problem brings on and the orignall problem the bird has to fight and we can only help it
pjc Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 True, but its often the aftercare that is more important than the treatment as the antibiotics strip imunity which needs to be re-established otherwise they are subject to conracting other infections etc Phil
Guest strapper Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 this also sounds very much like hexamita! clear watery droppings ,unable to fly., water intake increased...has anyone confirmed this is the problem?(circo virus,)
Guest IB Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 Adenovirus, isn't a virus hense the reason they prescribe antibiotics. Phil I'm surprised you think anything that ends with -'virus' isn't a virus. You don't have to read all the article at this link, which describes the human form of the illness. First few lines will be enough to tell you that Adeno is a virus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adenovirus
REDCHEQHEN Posted June 16, 2008 Report Posted June 16, 2008 what was the confirmed infection? http://www.pigeonbasics.com/clubs/fauldhousehc/news.php so there you have it
